Exclusive: I Can Keep Fasting In Ramadan Even When I Am Playing“ Fredi Kanoute - Goal.com
To be tremendously fit is a must for all professional footballers: a demand that leads some Muslim players to forgo the duty of fasting during Ramadan, preferring to fulfill their obligation when the football season ends. However, for SevillaĆ¢€™s Freddie Kanoute, this is not the case.

The former Tottenham Hotspur striker believes it is possible for a modern footballer to remain in peak physical condition during the holy month

Vision For A New Beginning Between America And The Muslim World By: Syed Waris Shere

President Barack Obama, extended a hand to the 1.5 billion Muslims around the globe. Relations with the world's Muslim population soured after the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003. Directed to Muslims across the world, the speech laid out Barack Obama’s desire for a "new beginning between the United States and Muslims around the world; one based upon mutual interest and mutual respect; and one based upon the truth that America and Islam are not exclusive, and need not be in competition. The relationship between Islam and West includes centuries of coexistence and cooperation, but also conflict and religious wars," he said. In a video address to Muslims on this auspicious occasion of the holy month of Ramadan, Obama said U.S. efforts to end the war in Iraq and to isolate extremists in Afghanistan and Pakistan are in keeping with America's responsibility to build a more peaceful and secure world. He has pledged "concrete actions" to renew ties with the Muslim world. President Barack Obama's address echoed his earlier landmark historical address in Cairo on June 4, when he laid out a new blueprint for U. S. Middle East policy, pledging to end festering mistrust and for a new beginning between Islam and the west. Obama has also assured U.S. support for a two-state solution recognizing the rights of Israelis and Palestinians to live in peace and security.
We must make every effort toachieve peace, justice and equality. Like his Cairo speech, Obama's Ramadan greeting wassprinkled with Arabic words and references that were meant both to resonate with the Islamicworld - by signaling that Obama knows something about its traditions - and to educate non-Muslims, said Nathan Brown of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. "All of theseefforts are aimed at advancing our common aspirations – to live in peace and security; to getan education and to work with dignity; to love our families, our communities and our God. It will take time and patient effort. We cannot change things over night, but we can honestly resolve to do what must be done, while setting off in a new direction -- toward the destination that we seek for ourselves, and for our children. That is the journey that we must travel together." , Obama said in his address.  "Beyond America’s borders, we are also committed to keeping our responsibility to build a world that is more peaceful and secure. That is why we are responsibly ending the war in Iraq. That is why we are isolating violent extremists while empowering the people in places like Afghanistan and Pakistan. That is why we are unyielding in  our support for a two-state solution that recognizes the rights of Israelis and Palestinians to live in peace and security. And that is why America will always stand for the universal rights of all people to speak their mind, practice their religion, contribute fully to society and have confidence in the rule of law", Obama said in his message to the Islamic World. As the
President has remarked during his historical speech in Cairo, this new beginning must be borne
out in a sustained effort to listen to each other, to learn from each other, to respect one another, and to seek common ground.

The San Francisco Chronicle portrays the speech as a unifying call to the Muslims of
the world. "This message was part of a larger push, a point made clear in the introduction to
the Ramadan video by Rashad Hussein, a deputy associate counsel in the White House who was the first Muslim in Obama's administration. "This month is also a time of renewal and this marks  the first Ramadan since the President outlined his vision for a new beginning between America and the Muslim world," Hussein wrote. The President's message is part of an on-going dialogue with Muslim communities that began on inauguration day and has continued with his statement on Nowruz, during trips to Ankara and Cairo.

In the final analysis, the speech by the President of the United States represented a dramatic and persuasive American manifesto for a new relationship with the Islamic World.  It may be the first time that a U.S. president has gone to such great lengths to recognize the month-long fasting period of the Islamic world. He has also stressed that, "this new beginning must be borne out in a sustained effort to listen to each other, to learn from each other, to respect one another and to seek common ground. I believe an important part of this is listening." The tolerance within the body of Islam is without parallel in history; class and race and color ceasing altogether to be barriers. Ramadan is the holy month in which Koran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad(pbuh). It is therefore a time when we must reflect upon the wisdom and guidance that comes with faith, and the responsibility that human beings have to one another. Islam’s role in this respect is in advancing justice, progress, tolerance, and the dignity of all human beings.

Why Foreign Policy Matters? By Dr. Shashi Tharoor

19 August 2009: Union Minister of State for External Affairs, Dr. Shashi Tharoor said that the ultimate purpose of any country’s foreign policy is to promote the security and well-being of its own citizens. We want a world that gives us the conditions of peace and security that will permit us to grow and flourish, safe from foreign de predations but open to external opportunities.

Dr. Tharoor was delivering the first national lecture series programme on ‘Why Foreign Policy Matters?’ at Kennedy Hall Auditorium of the Aligarh Muslim University. He said that our foreign policy debates in Parliament and the media seem obsessed with Pakistan with ophemera, or worse ephemera about Pakistan and urged that our society as a whole and particularly its educated young people, must care enough about India’s place in the world to participate actively in shaping our international posture.

He said that we do have a handful of thinkers on international issues and a twist-full of thinker tanks, but in quantum and quality of expertise and range of output they all have a long way to go before they match the role played by, for example, their equivalents in the United States and suggested that the situation will not improve unless we improve the study of international affairs at our Colleges and Universities.

He said that the Ministry of External Affairs would welcome much more spirited exchanges between MEA officials and academician, the corporate sector and civil society and pleaded that the sustainability and success of our international policy depends on both leadership by the Government of India and the active involvement of young Indian.

Dr. Tharoor called upon the youth to commit yourself to thinking about India and the world – about Indian in the world – and your own role in leading about it, helping to shape it, and on day, I hope, helping to lead it.

In reply to a question raised at the interactive session of the lecture, Dr. Tharoor denied that Indian had departed from Nehru’s foreign policy of defending the Muslim World especially the Arab World.

Addressing the media, former UN Under Secretary General, Dr. Tharoor has joined the voice against film actor Shahrukh Khan’s two-hour detention at a US Airport and said that this also happens to hundreds of innocent Muslim daily who do not have billion people to stand-up for them. It raises real questions about US procedures.

While delivering the presidential remarks, AMU Vice Chancellor, Professor P.K. Abdul Azis has said that the University has decided to create a Center of International Studies and diplomacy from the next academic session. He said a retired senior most diplomat, Mr. Israt Aziz is preparing the blue print of this proposed Center.

He also said that the Ministry of Human Resource Development has sanctioned Civil Service Coaching Academy with a grant of rupees ten crores so that AMU would produce better civil servants to serve the country.

Professor S. Imtiaz Hasnain, Coordinator, AMU National Lecture Series in his welcome address said that Dr. Tharoor is a writer of great fame and global leader of tomorrow. He said Dr. Tharoor has started his career as a diplomat in 1978.

Professor Pervez Mustajab, Controller of Examinations proposed vote of thanks.

Aise Aao By Farha Abid

.............. .Aise Aao.....................
Aise aao ke hur ik gul hur ik gul ke labo ko chume
Aise aao ke meri rooh ke taro mein jhankar uthe
…chamak uthe khwaab mere …
Dhank chupe shaam saje
Aise aao ki fizao ka bhi raang roop nikhar jaye
…. Sanwaar jaye..dharkan khud mein bikhar jaye
Aise aao ke na waqt ka hosh rahei
Mei bhi pyale mein madhosh rahei
Tukro tukro mein rahun… zulf mein uljhi rahun
Thori thori si jalun…hole hole se girun
Aao mere bhekne se pehle aao
Pehlo aao in taro ke gul hone se
Kum hone  dharkano ke..
Lau meri shamma ke kum hone se
Aao jald ke barish bhi intezaar mein hai
Hur lari uski mae halki phuhaar si hai.
Besabr hai, beqraar .... si hai

Dr.Mujeebur Rahman Khan gets Outstanding Scientist Award in Biopesticides

Dr.Mujeebur Rahman Khan, Reader, Department of Plant Protection, Aligarh
Muslim University was honored for his research on molecular characterization and
evaluation for efficacy of indigenous strains/isolates of various natural biocontrol agents
against plant diseases caused by fungi and nematodes, and for developing their
biopesticides at a National Conference on Ecofriendly Approaches in Sustainable
Agriculture and Horticulture held at the Amity University, Lucknow. He was conferred
with the Outstanding Scientist Award in Biopesticides, and was presented with a
memento-citation, certificate and a shawl in the inaugural function of the conference. His
researches have revealed that Aspergillus niger, pochonia chlamydosporia, Trichoderma
virens and Pseudomonas fluorescens can successfully control root-knot, root-rot and wilt
diseases of vegetable, pulse and ornamental crops. The DNA study of these
isolates/strains has also ascertained disease suppressing potential of the biocontrol agents.
Dr. Khan has invented a new and low cost biotechnology to produce biopesticides that
involve mass production of the bioagents on sawdust-soil-molasses mixture and
immobilization on a flyash-based carrier. The invented formulation is about 10 times less
expensive than the contemporaries available in the market. Patents on the invented
technology and products have been filed in USA (granted US 2006/0292124 A1) and
India (1621/DEL/2005). Filed trials of these biopesticides in different districts under a
DBT program have shown that seed treatment with 2 g biopesticide/ kg seeds
significantly controlled wilt, damping-off, root-knot and wilt disease complex leading to
yield enhancement of 3-5 q and 2-3 q and 6-8 q/ha in pulses. These biopesticides have
also proved growth promoter and can be used as biofertilizers.
Dr. Khan obtained Ph.D. in Plant Nematology in 1988 and thereafter worked as a
post Doc. at the North Carolina State University and the California Department of Food
and Agriculture, U.S.A. in 1988 and 1989 respectively. He has worked in the
commonwealth Institute of Parasitology, U.K.

World's Unique International Khuda Baksh Library By Professor Syed Waris Shere

With great pleasure I wish to share with the readers of Bihar and around the world, a brief history of the Khuda Baksh Oriental Public library and its founder, as recorded by my eminent historian father, Syed Ahsan Shere.

Upon his return to India in 1934, after studying at the school of Oriental Studies, University of London, my father served as the Curator of Patna Museum and later on became the Secretary Of Khuda Baksh Oriental public library.

Even though I am a student of science, I had a keen interest in history. I had the distinct opportunity and privilege in going through my father's memoirs, and in doing so, I got a glimpse of this unique and a remarkable world-renowned Khuda Baksh Oriental public library and its founder.

Khuda Baksh was born on 2nd August 1842. He was brought up under the guidance of his father who dedicated his life for the betterment of humanity. When his father was on his death-bed in 1876, he entrusted his son to open a public library. Khuda Bakhsh, thus, inherited from his father love for books and dedication to public service. He made it a mission of life to establish a public library so as to fulfill his father's dream and desire. He made every effort to acquire rare books and manuscripts. The Khuda Baksh Oriental Public Library was established in 1891.

A leaf from a rare copy of Holy Quran dated 1269 AD., transcribed by the celebrated calligraphist, Yaqut Al-Musta'simi' of Baghdad. Photo courtesy Khuda Baksh Library

The library is famous for its rare Arabic and Persian manuscripts, rich paintings and numerous volumes of rare books. Jehangir-Nama, Shah-Nama, Al-Quran, Tarikh-i-Khandan-i-Timuriya, Kitab-al-Hashaish and Al-Lumafi al-Tasawwuf are among the rare manuscripts in this collection. The manuscript of Diwan-i-Hafiz from the personal collection of Mughal emperors Humayun and Jehangir is also in the Khuda Baksh library. Kitab-Al-Hashaish is a revised Arabic version by Hunayn bin Ishaq of the Greek original dictionary of medicine listing the properties of medicinal plants. The manuscript of Kitab-Al-Tasrif describes in detail many methods and instruments of surgery with exquisite illustrations and is written in Arabic language with Mahgribi characters.

Also some of the rare collections are the oddities such as an inch-wide holy Quran. The Library also has a huge collection of more than 18,000 Arabic and Persian manuscripts and over 2000 rare paintings belonging to the Mughal and Rajput era. The Library is known for its extraordinary collection of more than 21,000 manuscripts, some of them extremely rare and richly illustrated, in Arabic, Pali, Pashtu, Persian, Sanskrit, Turkish and Urdu languages and also for its Mughal, Iranian, Central Asian and Rajput paintings. It has become a centre of research for the scholars of Islamic Studies, Medieval Indian History, West, South and Central Asian Studies, Mughal Architecture, Islamic Sciences and Mughal, Iranian, Central Asian and Rajput paintings. The Library also specializes in Islamic Studies, Tibb (Unani Medicine), Tazkira (Biography), Tasawwuf (Islamic Mysticism), Comparative religions, Medieval History, South East Asian History, West Asian History, Central Asian History, Medieval Science, Literature on Freedom Movement and National Integration as also Urdu, Persian and Arabic Literatures. Undoubtedly Khuda Baksh Oriental library is one of its kind in the world. "The Patna Oriental Public Library is one of the finest collections on Moslem literature in the World," remarked V.C. Scott O'Connor, an Orientalist of Edinburgh, England.
A leaf from a rare copy of Holy Quran dated 1269 AD., transcribed by the celebrated calligraphist, Yaqut Al-Musta'simi' of Baghdad. Photo courtesy Khuda Baksh Library

Khuda Baksh had struggled hard for years and paid fancy prices for rare manuscripts and books to build his precious collection. The British Museum once made him a magnificent offer for his collection but he declined. He told to O'Connor ... "I am a poor man and the sum they offered me was a princely fortune, but could I ever part for money with that to which my father and I have dedicated our lives...?" And as he said, his clear-cut features betrayed a single emotion; his large luminous eyes welled up with tears. "No" he said: "the collection is for Patna and the gift shall be laid at the feet of the Patna public".

Indeed we are fortunate to have this world renowned library with its unique collections located in Patna.

Challenges Of Global Security In The Twenty - First Century By Syed Waris Shere

The world is experiencing a global rebirth of attacks, eventhough terrorism has occured throuhout our history. Terrorism can be defined as "the deliberate creation of fear to bring out political change." Such acts or the threat of such action have been in existence for millennia. In my opinion no amount of outrage and condemnation can suffice to express the anger and frustration one feels when faced with such mindless brutality and violence. Terrorists and extremists know no borders. It has perpetrated brutal attacks in every part of the world. Terrorists attempt not only to create panic but also to weaken confidence in the government and the political leadership of the target country.

The religious and political extremism is playing a major role in various forms of violence. Religious extremists often reject the authority of secular governments and view legal systems that are not based on their religious beliefs as illegitimate. Terrorism is an act of indiscriminate violence that targets innocent people. Nobody knows when, where, and who will suffer next time. The worst about terrorism is that ordinary innocent people die. We must all be concerned about the loss of life and consider acts of terrorism are harmful to the whole international order and a challenge to humanity. It is a serious threat to democratic values and to international peace and security. The global security challenges of today cannot be fought effectively by one country alone -- no matter how powerful. The proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, regional conflicts, organised crime and environmental disasters are long-term international problems, and they require long-term multinational solutions. International terrorist networks pose a serious threat to our peace and security, and to the smooth functioning of the international system. Terrorism is the epitome of injustice because it targets innocent people. Ends do not justify means, and innocent civilians should never pay the price for the misdeeds of others or be used as pawns in settling political or military conflicts. Thousands of people die each year to terrorist attacks.

Countries that are troubled by these horrific acts have pondered an answer to the problem of terrorism for centuries but there is no universal agreement for a solution. A definition of terrorism has yet to be finalized, but Cindy C. Combs' book "Terrorism in the Twenty-First Century," she tries to define terrorism as: "a synthesis of war and theater, a dramatization of the most proscribed kind of violence-that which is perpetrated on innocent victims-played before an audience in the hope of creating a mood of fear, for political purposes." Peace, security, freedom and justice for all , irrespective of one's faith  and nationality, can be the best solution to terrorism. We must and should achieve these aims by meaningful dialogue towards all cultures and civilizations. Resolving terrorism will inevitably require responding to the politics of other countries.

United States of America is a global power and with global interests. It must be abundantly made clear that the problem of terrorism cannot be addressed only from the perspective of United States politics. America needs to start dealing with other communities' interests. Terrorists today have become more global because of freedom of movement. One solution is to hold international conference convened by the United Nations in which countries are brought together to deal with the issue of terrorism as a global problem. We must together build and develop this major crisis in the name of humanity because no country can ignore the influence on social, economic, and political structures around the world. We must all realize that the war against terrorism does not in itself solve micro- or sub-regional problems.

Violence in response to violence can only lead to further violence. I recall when Rev. John Dear a Catholic peace activist led a group of Nobel Peace Prize winners to Baghdad. Dear's profound account on his trip to Baghdad is summed up very eloquently: "We asked everyone the simple question, “What do you want us to do?” Everyone we met, from the Papal Nuncio to the Muslim Iman to the non-governmental organization leaders to hundreds of high school children to the hundreds of mothers holding their dying children, said: “Don’t kill us!” That sounds so obvious, but they said it with tears. If you want to help us, don’t kill us! If you want us to live in peace, don’t kill us! If you want us to be friends with you, don’t kill us! If you want Iraq to create a new democracy, don’t kill us! Send us food and medicine instead, and fund.
Then, we will live in peace with you. Violence cannot stop violence. We have to break the cycle of violence, renounce violence, start practicing creative active nonviolence on a level that the world has never seen, and reach out and embrace the world’s poor by meeting their every need. Then, we will win over the world, and no one will ever want to hurt a Westerner again. On that new day, we will sow the seeds of love and peace and discover what a world without terrorism, war, poverty, and fear is like".

In the final analysis to this grave problem, there is a vital need to cultivate amity and trust among fellow beings. Better intelligence, better policing and a deeper understanding of the phenomenon will go a longway to overcome this suffering. The international community must be resolute in countering terrorism, it must be scrupulous in the ways in which this effort is pursued. Greater respect for human rights, accompanied by democracy and social justice, will in the long term prove effective measures against terror. Terrorism is like cancer which has already reached a metastatic stage. It is spreading rapidly and must be rooted out from our history with every means in our command. If unchecked, it will be a threat to our civilization.

They often lack skills in airway and ventilator management. The doctors often rely on Anaesthesiologists for airway management which results in loss of critical time, and often poor outcome. To overcome this, the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care organizing Emergency and Trauma Airway Course (ETAC) in collaboration with the INDO-US Academic Council which will be inaugurated by the AMU Vice Chancellor on August 8 at 10:00 am at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College.

According to Dr. S. Moied Ahmed, Course Director that Prof. O.P. Kalra, Principal, University College of Medical Sciences, New Delhi and Prof. Praveen Aggarwal, National Chair, INDO-US Academic Council for Emergency & Trauma will be the Chief Guest and Guest of Honour respectively.

This course has been structured in a format which deviates from the regular pattern of airway workshop mostly followed. The concept of Chain of Airway Management has been developed while structuring the course curriculum which incorporates airway management, followed by oxygenation and mechanical ventilation. The course has two components the Basic and the Advanced Airway management.

The basic objective of this course is to help the participants sharpen their skills in this crucial aspect of emergency care so that they can incorporate this into a practical algorithm of emergency airway management.
