National Seminar on “Education in the New Millennium: Challenges and Issues” at AMU

From AMU News And Views

Aligarh February 28: Inaugurating a two day national seminar on "Education in the New Millennium: Challenges and Issues" organized by the Department of Education, the Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University Prof. P. K. Abdul Azis pointed out that in this globally changing scenario the educations are concerned with new challenges which need reform especially in techniques of teaching and in curriculum designing so that well equipped and efficient teachers may be produced to face the challenges of the new millennium. He further said that the theme of the Seminar is highly relevant at this moment, when there is an overwhelming concern regarding the quality and significance of education in the new millennium.

Professor Azis said that the Department of Education is one of the oldest departments of the University and has produced thousands of teachers to provide better education. He regretted that this department could not be used as the laboratory of University's maintained schools.

He said that the Muslim community is the most educationally backward community of this country and the University has taken a historic decision to establish five special Centres in different parts of the country and these Centres would be replica of the Aligarh Muslim University.

Delivering the keynote address Prof. Mohammad Akhtar Siddiqui, Chairperson, National Council for Teachers' Education, Government of India said that access of higher education has also to improve so as to make it available to all sections of the society equitably and with reasonable quality. At present 11% of the eligible population is enrolled in higher education programmes which is still less than average enrolment in higher education in the developing countries i.e. 11.25%. Eleventh Five Year Plan envisages enhancing the enrolment upto 15%. Seventy percent students enrolled in graduate programmes in colleges are pursuing general courses which have no link with the trained manpower requirement in the country. The issue needs to be addressed urgently.

He announced that the NCTE is currently engaged in bringing out a framework for the teacher education curriculum which will try to ensure that education processes in teacher education institutions are complemented with a desirable rigour and quality, the qualification of teacher educators and other norms and standards for training programmes are also being reviewed.

While welcoming the delegates from all parts of the country, Professor Roquiya Zainuddin, Chairperson of the Department of Education, AMU said that the purpose of education is to produce good human beings who are adjusted within themselves, can work for the welfare of the society and nation at large but despite increasing number of schools, colleges and universities, we have not been able to achieve what should have been achieved during the post independence era.

She said that it does not raise any doubt in that an over emphasis on materialistic gains/values can never produce a Mahatma Gandhi, a Sir Syed Ahmad Khan and a Tagore. We need selfless leaders to run our society, we need creative individuals who are not simply a machine producing information after information but students who are problem solvers, nation builders and have a global vision.

On this occasion AMU Vice Chancellor Prof. P. K. Abdul Azis released a book authored by Professor Roquiya Zainuddin. Dr. Nikhat Nasreen conducted the programme.

Lok Sabha Election 2009

Ref. No. 09/MBMC/P/98

Dated: 27. 02. 2009

Press Release

Even after sixty two years of Indian Independence, Muslim minority has been legged behind. To take steps forward to get rid of Muslim backwardness and victimization, the Millat Bedari Muhim Committee [MBMC], Aligarh launched a movement and consolidated secular forces in 2004 Lok Sabha election. UPA government was the result of this movement. But the condition of the community is not much better than before.

Once again the MBMC has started a campaign to consolidate the secular forces and has prepared a national level charter of demands of Muslims, which is being presented to all secular parties of India. One of such efforts was a meeting of teachers, students and scholars of Aligarh Muslim University and intellectuals with Mr. Amar Singh, National General Secretary of Samajwadi Party on 23rd February, 2009 at his residence in 27, Lodhi Estate, New Delhi.

But after the media coverage of this high level meeting, it has been seen that the message of the meeting is being made wrong.

Jasim Mohammad, President MBMC, said that the message of the meeting with Amar Singh has taken a wrong shape. Our purpose of the meeting was to put up the problems and demands of Muslim community in front of Samajwadi Party and to consolidate the secular forces. AMU community has always been supported all secular forces who are working for the unity of the nation and development of India. As in 2004 we worked to unite the secular forces and secular vote, this year also, we will not only support but also campaign for those secular parties who will fulfill the promises of Muslim community.

Jasim Mohammad criticized the recent development of few Muslims who are making new fronts at this crucial juncture when India has to decide its future. He said, "Why do these self-minded people become active at the time of election? Why do not they work during the tenure of the government? By such activities they indirectly support the communal and fascist forces like BJP and RSS."

He also informed that the MBMC is also trying to seek appointment from other secular political parties to raise the issues and demand of Muslim community.

Dean of Law, George Washington University Visited AMU

You will be pleased to read the feed back from Fred Lawrence, Dean
of Law School at GWU, on his trip to Aligarh.

This trip of Dean Lawrence is result of the AAA Washington efforts,
mainly thru the connections of Frank Islam. The effort was initiated
when VC AMU visited Washington. He met members of AAA Washington at
a grand reception arranged by the association in his honor and next
day he visited two universities, John Hopkins and George Washington.
The meetings were arranged by Frank Islam. The President AAA
Washington Dr. Fazal Khan and I joined Frank Islam and Prof P.K.
Abdul Azis to these meetings. Frank has been following very closely
the progress and has acted as intermediately to make it happen.
Hopefully it will bring some good results. I think this news is
worth wide circulation. It shows that each individual organization
can contribute towards the betterment of AMU.

A. Abdullah

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Frank

This has been a remarkable trip to India for me, even by my high
standards. Let me just describe one 24-hour period to give you the
trip in microcosm. It was the day of my visit to Aligarh Muslim
University .

We were picked up at our hotel in Delhi Monday afternoon at 3.00 by
a driver sent by the University. We were accompanied by both the Dean
of the Law School and a graduating senior from the Law School who is
clearly one of their stars and who, I am very pleased to say, has
applied to GW for a Master of Laws degree next year. For the student,
it was a chance for an interview, as it were, with the Dean and
Associate Dean for International and Comparative Law and he used it
well; very impressive.

Dinner Monday night, as you know, was at the home of the Vice
Chancellor. He is a very impressive man as you well know, and he is
going to take AMU in major new directions. He had invited the faculty
of the Law School (27 professors) along with other senior members of
the administration and faculty of the University. Tuesday, we had
meetings with the Dean and his faculty to discuss
the nature of future collaborations, which was very productive. It
turns out that we are the first American law school to make it to
Aligarh. I was then given the opportunity to address and then interact
with an auditorium of roughly 100 students. I may well have been the
first American many (all?) of them had met in person. They were
wonderful – bright, interested, optimistic, focused, and polite to a
degree unimaginable for most American students. Whereas the faculty of
the law school is 100% male, the student body was around 1/3 women and
judging from the clothing, they covered the spectrum – some with heads
covered and some with western dress, and everything in between. I
believe that we now have a new and important source of Master of Laws
students, some of whom will be able to pay our tuition and some of
whom will require scholarships in order to do so. This will require
attention on our part.

Frank thank you so much for making this connection. There is great
deal that GW Law and AMU can accomplish together. I look forward to
getting together when I am back in DC to discuss all of this at much
greater depth. This is a very exciting opportunity.

Warm regards,

Fred

International Seminar on “Indo-Iranian Heritage: Importance and Relevance of Persian Language and Literature”

ALIGARH, February 24:

The Ambassador of Islamic Republic of Iran, Syed Mahdi Nabizadah said that the growth and continuation of the age-old relations of Iran with the Indian sub-continent reached the peak of the written history so that it became the foundation of all cultural ties between the two ancient and civilized nations.

He was addressing the inaugural function of the three-day International Seminar on "Indo-Iranian Heritage: Importance and Relevance of Persian Language and Literature", organized by the Institute of Persian Research, Aligarh Muslim University.

Mr. Nabizada pointed out that the Persian poem and literature, introduced to many nations the values of the knowledge and spirituality and rejoiced the thinkers who during many centuries has been beloved of the kings and the great personalities and had been trained by the learned persons and writers to such an extent that no language other than Persian could garner such a large number of poets and men of letters familiar to the secrets of the sweetness of Persian.

He said that there had been age old strong commercial and cultural ties between the people living in the Shush region of southern Iran and the Sindh valley as the items found from the remains of Mohanjodaro, Takshila and Harappa are similar to those found from the Iranian Plateau, Tigris and Euphrates Valley.

The Ambassador of Islamic Republic of Iran mentioned that most of the remains of the Iranian culture and civilization in the Indian sub-continent pertains to the Persian and they are well preserved in the high number of books on history, vocabulary, persian, grammar, a variety of sciences and mystic walks.

Inaugurating the Seminar, Mr. Ali Akbar Ashari, Cultural Advisor to the Iranian President said that after the Iran revolution, his country has progressed tremendously in the field of education. He said more than five percent peoples of Iran are getting higher education and fifty thousand books published yearly and more than two thousand libraries were established to provide better knowledge.

Delivering the keynote address Dr. Moosa Raza, Chairman, Southern India, Educational Trust, Chennai said that the very purpose of the existence of a nation is not merely to prosper materially but to safeguard all the stands of culture that go to make it what it is.

Persian language and literature has been one of those strong currents like yeast in bread flour that permeates what we call Indian culture. He said that when a culture dies, a nation dies, a country dies. For a nation's identity is its culture, its language, its art, its architecture and its philosophy of life.

In his presidential remarks, the Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University Prof. P. K. Abdul Azis assured the delegates to provide all types of support and partnership. He said that the Department of Persian of Aligarh Muslim University is doing excellent work in the field of teaching and research.

Prof. Azarmi Dukht Safavi, Director, Institute of Persian Research highlighted the objectives of the Seminar and said a large number of delegates from all parts of India and abroad are participating in the three day deliberations.

She hoped that a common heritage between Iran and India would be strengthened further through implementing suitable programmes in the Universities and the scientific and research centres all over the Indian Subcontinent.

Prof. Mahdi Mohaghegh, Director, Cultural Heritage Foundation, Iran and Mr. Karim Najafi Barzigar, Cultural Counselor, Iran also addressed. Professor Mohd. Asif Naim Siddiqui, Chairman, Department of Persian proposed a vote of thanks.

AMU spreads its wings

Original Message from http://groups.yahoo.com/group/AMUNetwork/

At the helms in Aligarh for the last 20 months, Dr Abdul Aziz is the first non-Urdu speaking vice chancellor of the University. He spoke to M A Siraj for Deccan Herald recently.

Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) is in an expansion mode. Following the presentation of report by the Justice Rajinder Sachar on the socio-economic and educational conditions of Muslims in India, the HRD Ministry has approved a plan by the AMU to set up its extension centres in five cities viz. Bhopal, Pune, Calicut, Katihar and Murshidabad. It has earmarked a sum of Rs 4,000 crore for the new campuses during the 11th five-year plan.
AMU is a central university as per its constitution and elects a vice chancellor every five year through its court. The University was so far mainly admitting students from educationally backward states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. But under its new role, it has set up admission centres in Kolkata, Calicut, Bhopal and Pune and will be adding Lucknow and Hyderabad from the 2009 academic session.

It was Muslim reformer Sir Syed Ahmed Khan who founded the Muslim Anglo Oriental College in 1878 in Aligarh. Raja Mahendra Pratap was the first student to graduate out of the MAO College. MAO College was upgraded into the Aligarh Muslim University in 1921 and became a central university after Independence.

Around one-third of the total 30,000 students are non-Muslims. The University has produced luminaries such as singer Talat Mahmood, film dialogue writer Dr Rahi Masoom Raza, song writer Shaharyar, writer Qurratulain Hyder, Historian Irfan Habib, Geographer Mohammed Shafi and geologist Shamim Jairajpuri.

Advent of vice chancellor Dr Abdul Azis, a Keralite raised a few heckles in the academic community.

A disciplinarian, Dr Azis has enforced a strict code for teachers to remain on their seats between 8am and 4pm.
No condonation for lack of attendance of students too has bruised a few egos. In fact, last year, some goons set aflame the VC's lodge.

At the helms in Aligarh for the last 20 months, Dr Aziz is the first non-Urdu speaking vice chancellor of the University. He spoke to M A Siraj for Deccan Herald recently. Excerpts:

What do you perceive AMU's standing among academic institutions today to be?

AMU enjoys a fairly good standing among the universities in the nation. It is on 9th position among 300 Indian universities in matters of research publications. AMU's engineering college figures on 7th position for funding during 10th Plan by Prof. Joshi and has been recommended for upgradation on par with the IITs.

PURSE, a rating of centres for excellence in science and technology, has recognised our engineering college too as a centre of excellence. Our History Department is recognised as the most prestigious centre of excellence in the country since 1968.

AMU seems to have developed an ambitious plan to expand beyond its campus.

Yes, we will set up five extension centres in Calicut, Pune, Katihar (Bihar), Murshidabad (West Bengal) and Bhopal.

Education is looked after by the State Governments while the Muslim educational backwardness is because of deficiency at the primary level. Do you think AMU will be able to make a difference?

The AMU, BHU and the Jamia Millia are the only central universities in the country that are allowed to run schools. At least one-third of the students in AMU currently study under eight high schools being run in Aligarh. The model will be replicated in all five extension centres. This will address the issue to some extent.

But we may be able to run teachers' training programme for Urdu medium schools at the centres.

Any initiative to upgrade the general academic standards and environment of the University?

Several measures have been undertaken recently. I have placed an academic rejuvenation agenda to guide 500 doctorates. Under this, 500 theses have to be submitted every year. This year we could produce 320. Classroom attendance has been enhanced to 75 per cent as condition for appearance in exams.

Every teacher is being asked to produce at least one research paper. Nearly 1,000 papers have been submitted this year by teachers. 500 teachers will be required to bring research projects each worth Rs 20 lakh every year from overseas.

We have signed MoUs with universities like Georgia, Georgia Tech, Wisconsin, Young Town University. A diploma course is being introduced on Islamic Banking and Finance from next year.

Holy Qur'an

Assalamualaikum,
Check this out,

Very interesting findings of
Dr. Tariq Al Swaidan
might grasp your attention:
Dr.Tarig Al Swaidan discovered some verses in the

Holy Qur'an
That mention one thing is equal to another,
i.e. men are equal to women.
Although
this makes sense grammatically,
the astonishing fact is that the number of
times the word man appears in

the Holy Qur'an
is 24 and number of times the word
woman appears is also 24,

therefore not only is this phrase correct in
the grammatical sense but also true mathematically,

i.e. 24 = 24.
Upon further analysis of various verses,

he discovered that this is consistent throughout the whole

Holy Qur'an
where it says one thing is like another.
See below for astonishing result of
the words mentioned number of times in Arabic
Holy Qur'an
Dunia (one name for life) 115.
Aakhirat (one name for the life after this world)
115
Malaika (Angels) 88 . Shayteen (Satan) 88
Life 145 ...... Death 145
Benefit 50 . Corrupt 50
People 50 .. Messengers 50
Eblees (king of devils) 11 . Seek refuge from Eblees 11
Museebah (calamity) 75 . Thanks ! 75
Spending (Sadaqah) 73 . Satisfaction 73
People who are mislead 17 .D Dead people 17
Muslimeen 41 .J Jihad 41
Gold 8 .E Easy life 8
Magic 60 .F Fitnah (dissuasion, misleading) ! 60
Zakat (Taxes Muslims pay to the poor) 32 ....
Barakah (Increasing or blessings of wealth)
32
Mind 49 .N Noor 49
Tongue 25 .S Sermon 25
Desite 8 .F Fear 8
Speaking publicly 18 .P Publicising 18
Hardship 114 .... Patience 114
Muhammed 4
.S Sharee'ah (Muhammed's teachings) 4
Man 24. Woman 24
And amazingly enough have a look how many times
the following words appear:
Salat
5, Month 12, Day 365,
Sea 32, Land 13
Sea + land = 32+13= 45
Sea = 32/45*100q.=71.11111111%
Land = 13/45*100 = 28.88888889%
Sea + land 100.00%
Modern science has only rec! ently proven that the water covers
71.111% of the
earth, while the land covers
28.889%.
Is this a coincidence? Question is that
Who taught Prophet
Muhammed (PBUH) all this?
Reply automatically comes in mind that

ALMIGHTY ALLAH
taught him.
This as
the
Holy Qur'an
also tells us this.
please pass this on to all your friends
Aayah
87 of Suraa (Chapter) Al-Anbia !
para 17:
LA ILAHA ILA ANTA
SUBHANAKA INI KUNTU MINA ZALIMEEN.
During the next 60 seconds,
stop whatever you are doing,

and take this opportunity.
(Literally, it is only 1 minute).
All you have to do is
The following:
PLEASE SEND THIS TO ALL PEOPLE THAT YOU KNOW
