MP Mausam Noor is new face of Congress in Bengal

MP Mausam is new face of Congress in Bengal
26 May 2009, 0325 hrs IST, TNN

Mausam Noor's name as Congress candidate for North Malda was announced late. Another uncle, popularly called Lebu mama, was the earlier favorite. but as things turned out Sonia Gandhi chose the 29-year-old Mausam. "We started a month late. It was very hectic. Morever, people were shaky about my prospects. I had to prove to many, even in my family, I could do it," she says. And she did.

In the past one year, Mausam's life has sped at a far more dizzying pace than she would have liked, especially since her MLA mother Rubi Noor's unexpected death in June 2008. "I always knew I'd join politics but much later in life," says the newly-elected MP, who had completed about a year in Delhi's Fox & Mandal law firm when she returned to Malda last year. Mausam won the bypolls to become the Sujapur MLA.

A young articulate Muslim, Mausam can well represent the face of a new resurgent Congress. In her, come together the dynamism of young India and a dynastic nation's undoubtable political legacy that brings her loyal followers. After all, she is the niece of Congress veteran AB Ghani Khan Chaudhry. One of her sisters manages her family's vast real estate business; another is a surgeon in New York.

Her mother, Rubi Noor, was Sujapur's MLA for 20 years. It was natural, if early, says Mausam, to step into her shoes. "The love we receive from Malda's people motivates me. People came out only to see what Ghani Khan's niece looked like," says the wildlife and trekking enthusiast, a regular at tiger reserves. She is fond of photography too; her Nikon N-76 a constant companion during her jungle jaunts.

Dear Aligs,

Business: King Faisal University was founded in 1975 and is located in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. It has two campuses, the main one is located in Al-Hassa, while the other is in Dammam. Resolution of GB Meeting of AMUTA

ALIGARH MUSLIM UNIVERSITY TEACHERS' ASSOCIATION,

ALIGARH

May 22, 2009

Unanimous Resolution passed by the General Body of AMU Teachers' Association in its meeting held on 22nd May, 2009.

Item No.1. This meeting of the General Body of AMU Teachers' Association (AMUTA) held on 22nd May, 2009 expresses its deep concern over the delay in holding of the General Selection Committees for promotions/appointments in various departments of the University. The General Body is greatly perturbed over the slow pace of convening the General Selection Committees (GSC) by the University administration as Selection Committees for only a few departments have been held during the last two years. The meeting urges upon the Vice-Chancellor to expedite the process so as to complete one round of General Selection Committee in the University within three months. The fresh notification of the new UGC guidelines for the promotions/appointments of teachers is expected to be different from the existing one. In that case a large number of AMU teachers would be deprived of the benefits of promotions under the Vth Pay Commission if the General Selection Committees are not held at the earliest. This meeting expects the Vice-Chancellor to take up the matter on priority basis and convene the General Selection Committees at the earliest, giving preference to those departments where the General Selection Committees have not been held for a longer period. This meeting further calls upon the University administration to draw a schedule of such Selection Committees urgently and make it available to the teaching community so that the tension of such a long wait for the Selection Committee may be relieved.

The meeting unanimously resolves that AMUTA would be constrained to resort to other democratic means if effective steps are not initiated by the University administration in this regard and a time bound schedule of the Selection Committee is not prepared. The future course of action would be decided by the General Body of the Association in its next meeting.

Item No.2 This meeting of the General Body of AMUTA also expresses its strong resentment and deep concern over the holding of the General Selection Committee for the placement of Lecturer to Lecturer (Senior Scale) instead of Screening Committee.

The meeting is of the considered opinion that such a step is a flagrant violation of the provisions of the AMU Ordinances and UGC guidelines and is contrary to the procedure followed in the University for more than two decades. The meeting calls upon the University administration to restore the old procedure for the placement of Lecturers to Senior Scale so that no inconvenience is caused to the aspiring Lecturers. The Screening Committees should be convened at the earliest.

The General Body authorizes the Executive Committee of AMUTA to form a delegation to visit UGC and meet the Minister for Human Resource Development to discuss the above two issues and the other pressing issues concerning the University.

Why there is no any appointment in the department of Geology ?

Dear All,

Geology Department of AMU has a shining account in the past. But in last few years its educational environment has improved a lot and the students are producing far better results as a healthy and competitive educational environment has been created. For achieving this target of success, its teachers have always worked as a better guide.

The thing which most concerns me is that the department of geology has seen this success with its professors retiring one by one all these days. In last 10 years around 6-7 professors have retired and there is an absolute crisis of professors in this department at the moment. As per my information for about four years the only professor left in the department is the one who was appointed by the last selection committee held more than a decade ago. It's very unfortunate that since that time there is not even a single appointment of Professor has ever taken place. The current chairman is a Reader.

Is this not an injustice towards the students who are deprived of the teaching from many professors (who were supposed to be appointed for them as in any other department) who are meant to be a source of higher standard of learning and guidance with their greater research and teaching experience? And would not this have improved exponentially the current rate of success? Is it enough to have a single Professor in a department which runs a Diploma, PG Diploma, Graduation, Post graduation, M. Phil and PhD programmes? Apart from it also helps run newly introduced graduation programme in Women's college? Is there not a minimum allotted number of Professors/ Readers/Lecturers, a Deptt. Of university must have?

There are many senior readers and lecturers in the department who are eligible and waiting to be promoted even under Career Advancement Scheme for years. But this needs a selection committee to be held and when will it take place; no one knows. On the other hand there are lecturers whose classmates have become professors many years back just because they were not in AMU. A teacher is said to be an ultimate architect and designer of humanity and all its forms. But unfortunately if they are not awarded for their work and not given a fair treatment, how can we dream of an improved situation? Even for different other departments, selection committees are taking place; Why not for the department of Geology?? Even there are many branches of Applied Geology which need specialist faculties and many specialized courses are also the need of hour with relation to the changing trend of market demand.

If we truly care for the future of AMU and the betterment of its geology department, the necessary steps need to be taken. I would appreciate if the initiative is taken at the right moment i.e. as soon as possible.

EC Meeting Impressions by Drs. Mujahid Beg and Mohd. Asif Khan

PRESS RELEASE:
Aligarh Muslim University has received a notice under section 13 of AMU Aligarh, 1920, served by the Visitor of AMU (Hon'ble President of India) on conflicting representations alleging there in allegations and counter allegations communicated through Ministry of Human Resource Development to the Registrar AMU, Aligarh on 20-04-2009 and they had desired the representation of the University, duly approved by the Executive Council latest by May 5, 2009.Due to the directive of the Visitor, an Executive Council Meeting was convened on 03-05-2009 on the following agenda.

(a)Alleged holding successive meetings of the executive council by the Vice Chancellor, despite lack of quorum. (b) Alleged inter alia, malafides, incompetence, violation of Act, etc by VC, (c) Alleged autocratic style of functioning of VC and other irregularities including flagrant violations of Act, Statutes and Ordinances of AMU, (d) complaint against VC relating to implementation of ACP scheme, and (e) counter allegations that disgruntled Executive Council Members who had vested interest of various kinds are bent upon disrupting law and order which had been restored on the AMU campus under the stewardship of Vice Chancellor and emphasized the Vice Chancellor Prof. P. K. Abdul Azis has brought out conducive academic atmosphere on the university campus and that classes were being held peacefully and examinations has been conducted on time.

According to Executive Council Members Dr. Mujahid Beg and Dr. Mohd Asif, the EC meeting convened on May 3, 2009 has its historic importance because the allegations and counter-allegations were directed by the Hon'ble President of India in the capacity of Visitor of AMU to place it in the Executive Council meeting on May 3, 2009, and thereafter submit the approved report latest by May 5, 2009 to the Visitor. Both EC members namely Dr. Mujahid Beg and Dr. Mohd Asif apprised that a delegation of sixteen members of statutory august bodies of Executive Council, AMU Court and Academic Council as well as AMU Teacher's Association had given a memorandum to Shri Arjun Singh, Hon'ble Union Minister of HRD demanding a CBI inquiry for arson, burning of university properties, murders, stabbing, etc since last twenty years. Dr. Beg and Dr. Asif said that those who were either expelled or suspended from the university in their yesteryears in AMU are now unfortunately members of the Executive Council, and are presently indulging in the same anti-university activities for which they were suspended or expelled in their yesteryears at AMU. Apart from the above, allegations leveled (a) by few disgruntled EC members having vested interest (b) allegations by old boys association and (c) allegations by non-teaching representatives were also deliberated in the EC meeting. The allegations leveled by anti-VC members were refuted successfully by displaying documented proofs, whereas the counter-allegations against some disgruntled EC members having vested interest were proven to be correct as evidenced by documented proofs. Thus, the whole agenda was approved by the Executive Council by majority i. e. 13 members in favor, 07 members dissenting and 01 member abstaining from voting.

Dr. Mujahid Beg further stated that he has come with a sole mission of weeding out corrupt and criminals from AMU who were flourishing since last twenty years. He said even if his near and dear ones are found guilty, he will ensure appropriate action against them. Dr. Beg also said that in order to weed out corruption, he would not hesitate in seeking the help of Hon'ble President of India as well as Hon'ble Prime Minister of India. Dr. Beg further said one nominated EC member (name removed by moderator) who is against the present VC because of vested interest always levels false and frivolous allegations against the administration but always ignores his illegal actions. Few lines were deleted by moderator which have a reference to an EC member.

Defamation proceedings against The Times of India- S T A T U S R E P O R T

Defamation proceedings against The Times of India-

S T A T U S R E P O R T

Dear All,

Salaam Alai Kum

I trust this email finds you well.

I would like to update you all regarding the present state of affairs pertaining to defamation proceedings tiled "Farrukh Khan Vs. The Times of India & others" in court of law against The Times of India and others for their article/write-up captioned "AMU: where degrees are sold like toffees"

The earlier date of hearing was on April 2, 2009 and the matter was adjourned due to no show of the counsel representing Times of India in the court. The next date is scheduled to be on October 14, 2009. The advocate representing me pleased to ex parte award in my favor to which the court refused. I am required to submit an affidavit in the court to this effect and I am travelling to India for this purpose on May 28, 2009.

I am optimistic that results of this proceeding, though in long length of time, will produce positive output. Till now TOI remains defensive in court and is trying to convince that its intention was not to defame AMU in particular and Muslim community in general by effect of the disputed article.

You all may rest assured that further developments, of course, shall be reported to you once and when occurred.

Should you need any further information/clarifications/assistance re the subject matter please do not hesitate to contact me.

May Allah bless us!

Best regards,

Farrukh Khan

orphan to food and drink, Allah will grant in reward, Paradise."
