Extra-Mural Lecture in the Dept. of Islamic Studies (A.M.U)
The Scope and Character of Modern Science-Implications for Islamic
Civilization.
Under the Extra-Mural Lecture programme organized by the Dept. of
Islamic Studies (A.M.U. Aligarh) on 26th Feb. 2009, Prof. Kunwar Muhammad Yusuf Amin (Dept.of Ilmul Adviah, A.K.Tibbiya College, A.M.U.) delivered a lecture on the Scope and Character of Modern Science-Implications for Islamic Civilization. The programme was presided over by Dr. Muhammad Zaki Kirmani, Director, Centre for Studies on Science (Aligarh)
Delivering the Lecture, Prof. Yusuf Amin stated that modern science
should be absorbed by the Eastern Civilization in a recasted manner with ethical values guiding both the selection of research topics and the practical application of scientific findings. He further observed that the new model of science may help the West also, which itself wants to give a new shape to science so that grave physical problems like Global Warming and cultural problems like the loss of meaning and ethical sense may be avoided.
In his presidential remarks, Dr. Zaki Kirmani said that
although it may not be said so explicitly but western modern science
inculcates materialism and rejection of supra-human guidance. So science should undergo a rebirth, combining observation with divine guidance.
Earlier, welcoming the guests and participants, Prof. Zafarul Islam,
Chairman, Dept. of Islamic Studies stressed the need for subordinating science to religious values and for the development of science in such a way which could benefit humanity. In his introductory remarks, Dr. Abdul Majid Khan, Convener of the Extra-Mural Lectures called for imbuing self-confidence among scholars for undertaking critical analysis of modern western science. He also emphasized the need of abjuring the blind imitation of western scientific paradigms in order to save humanity from the worst
catastrophes. The lecture followed by a lively discussion joined by a number of scholars and researchers. The programme was attended by the faculty members, students and research scholars of the different Depts. of the University and other institutions in addition to that of Islamic Studies and Arabic.
