Three New Depts in Jawahar Lal Nehru Medical College

Submitted by admin3 on 25 April 2009 - 4:45pm.

By Saad Bin Zia, RINA,

Aligarh: The visitor of Aligrah Muslim University (AMU) and the president of India Shrimati Pratibha Patil has approved the establishment of three new departments at the Jawahrlal Nehru Medical College of AMU. The three new departments are: department of Pediatric Surgery, department of Cardiothoracic Surgery and department of Neurosurgery. After the establishment of these three new departments M.Ch course would also be started as well as a better care for the patients will be possible.

The proposal for these three new courses was first sent to the University Grants Commission, which in turn, after a careful study sent it to the visitor of Aligarh Muslim University hon'ble president of India Shrimati Pratibha Devisingh Patil who approved the proposal.

After the opening and starting of academic activities of these three new Departments the total number of departments in the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College would increase to twenty five. It must be mentioned here that the proposal for these three new departments was sent to the Hon'ble President of India long back but it was in pending. However, the Aligarh Muslim University administration vehemently pursued the case and clinched the deal after breaking much sweat.

The approval has given a new hope to the students especially those studying in the medical sciences. This has also paved the way for the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College to grant a status at par with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi

Feedback on the SFRR, 2009 at Department of Biochemistry, AMU

The Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Life-Sciences recently organized a Satellite symposium on the Society for Free Radical Research in March, 2009. An update on the meeting was posted on the AMU Network. Based on the feedback obtained, most of the delegates were very pleased by the organizational abilities of the Organizing committee in general and to the Chair of the Department, Professor S.M Hadi and Organizing secretary, Professor Masood Ahmad in particular.

Dr. Thomas Devasagayam, from the Radiation Biology & Health Sciences Division of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, highly acclaimed the arrangements of the meeting and was very impressed by the organizational leadership of Prof. S.M.Hadi. Dr. Devasagayam also called upon everybody from AMU to "take active part in the activities of the society and encouraged everybody to attend the future meetings".

Dr. Suresh Tyagi, a well known Scientist, who runs a very well funded research lab at the School of Medicine, University of Louisville, KY, USA, was also highly appreciative of the manner in which the meeting was conducted. Dr. Tyagi in an email to Dr. Ahmad writes "Thank you very much for the wonderful and excellent hospitality during the meeting at AMU. Please keep in touch. Please forward my email address to the Master and Final B.Sc students in your biochemistry programs."

Such positive actions will definitely help the scientists of the next generation in their research endeavors that are currently being groomed at AMU.

Dr. Michael Moorhouse, from Netherlands, also lauded the efforts of the organizing committee. In Dr. Moorhouse's words "it was a wonderful experience and your hard work in the arrangement of this benefited everybody concerned."

In a congratulatory email sent to Professor Ahmad, Dr. Elisabeth Deindl, from the Walter-Brendel-Center for Experimental Medicine Ludwig-Maximilians-University, Munich, Germany was very impressed by the research activities going on at AMU, "For me it was very awe-inspiring to see your University and to get an impression of the research you are doing. You have organized a great meeting with famous national and international speakers. Congratulations!"

--------------------------

This is indeed a moment for all of us to feel proud of the research activities going on at AMU. Such meetings should be held on a more regular basis that will provide a platform for interaction amongst the Scientists and the Research Scholars. This will definitely help in the development of scientific acumen among the researchers and students, which will help them immensely in their career development which in large will be beneficial to the student, Institution and the community at large.

Baseless report against AMU VC in newspapers

File Photo of A.M.U. Vice Chancellor P.K. Abdul Azis

*Aligarh** April 22:* A meeting of the senior teachers of AMU was held today
to discuss the mischievous news reports that appeared in some newspapers
that "An enquiry has been setup against the AMU Vice Chancellor". The
members felt that such baseless reports are bound to damage the image of the
institution and consequently the career of thousands of students pursuing
studies in AMU.

The University has not received any communication relating to setting up of
an enquiry either by MHRD or the Visitor. Prof. P.K. Abdul Azis, Vice
Chancellor has set in motion a slew of academic initiatives and put the
University on the track of democratic functioning and transparent
governance.

The senior teachers urged the newspapers to be more careful in carrying out
any such unverified report so that the good name of the University and its
Vice Chancellor is not tarnished. They also strongly deplored the
individuals responsible for misleading the press by selective distortions
and leaks as a personal vendetta which will harm the short term and long
term interest of the University.

The following faculty members were present: Prof. Mohammad Zubair Khan,
Prof. Muslim Taj Ahmad, Prof. Shamim Ahmad, Prof. S.H. Hashmi, Prof. Bilquis
Nasim Waris, Prof. S. Iqbal Ali, Prof. Pervez Mustajab, Prof. Mohammad
Irfan, Prof. Tariq Mansoor, Prof. Mohd. Anis, Dr. Shakeel Samdani and Prof.
Saud Ali Khan.

Requirement of Principal for Al-Barkaat Public School

As you may be aware that Al-Barkaat Educational Society is running a high quality and reputed school named as Al-Barkaat Public School at Aligarh since 2004. The school is affiliated to CBSE, New Delhi and runs classes from Pre-nursery to class XII. The total strength of students in the two sections of the school is 1200 and 200 respectively.

The Al-Barkaat Campus houses two boys hostels and a girls hostel with total capacity of 300 and 150 respectively. The attached dining hall, mosque and extensive facilities for academic and co-curricular activities make it a perfect place for learning and grooming.
The last year's performance of our students in the CBSE Board Examination in class X has been 100%. More than 90% students have secured first division and 146 distinctions in total 315 papers in which our students appeared.

At present we are looking for a principal for the school. The desired candidate will be a person of high caliber with sound academic background with essential academic qualifications, proven record of performance with working experience as a principal in a CBSE affiliated school and with a good command over language (English, Hindi and Urdu).

The deserving candidate will be remunerated as per State/CBSE norms. The interested candidates may submit their details to the undernamed.
Al-Barkaat is proud to be a step forward in the Aligarh Movement. It has drawn and will continue to draw support and well-wishes of Aligs. It is my appeal to the members of AMU Network to provide brotherly help in our search for a right candidate for principal ship of our school. If you know someone who fits our requirements kindly forward this information to him/her.

Saiyid Hamid : Muslim face of India , A Review

Book review

Celebrating Greatness

Book: Saiyid Hamid - Muslim face of India
Compiler: Mushtaque Madni
Publisher: P.A. Inamdar, "Daulat", 963 New Nana Peth, Pune 411002
Pages: 152+16
Price: Rs 400
Year: 2009

By M Zeyaul Haque

A festschrift celebrating Saiyid Hamid's life, lived meaningfully and to the hilt, is a welcome addition to reading material available on the Subcontinent's men of substance.

It is interesting to mull over what constitutes the ''greatness'' of great men (and women). Well, may be extraordinary intelligence. The willingness to work consistently, intelligently, and hard. Physical and/or moral courage, or both. Compassion, wider sympathies that don't get limited by national, ethnic, racial, religious or sectarian boundaries. Excellence in sports, literature, film, music, scholarship. Any of them, or a combination of some of them. This list could be quite long.

Aperson meeting Saiyid Hamid for the first time begins to have some idea of his extraordinariness. He/she would tell herself/himself, "Hey, this is not the usual stuff. They are no longer producing this brand." And, gradually, as days pass into weeks, months, years and decades, his greatness begins to unfold before that person like an exquisite perfume which begins to grow on you only after you wear it.

Educationist PA Inamdar, who shares with Saiyid Hamid his passion for spreading knowledge, took it upon himself to have a celebratory volume compiled and published. The compilation has been done by Mushtaque Madni, described on the book's jacket as "writer, journalist and scholar of comparativereligions." Twenty eight friends and admirers of Saiyid Hamid have contributed to this book, most of them being familiar names in India 's academic, legal and social circles.

We have Govind Narain and Prof. Amrik Singh, Prof. Mushirul Hasan and Prof. B.Sheikh Ali, Justice Sachar, UC Agarwal, Prof. Vipin KumarTripathi, Asghar Ali Engineer and Dr. John Dayal, among other luminaries. Reading this slender volume cover to cover one gets the impression that the myriad qualities of head and heart that Saiyid Hamid possesses are, in some measure, also reflected in the writers.

The headlines of the write-ups are indicative of the qualities that the writers have seen in Saiyid Saheb (and they also reflect on the "worldview" of the authors as they indicate what they value in great persons). Syed Shahabuddin comes on as the cheerleader of this Last Indian Hero. The lusty Syed Sahabuddin headline, ''89, Not Out'' seems to pep up the hero for a deep second wind, an explosive burst of muscular energy, to sprint across the next 11 years, before thinking of relaxing or winding down. Let us hope and pray all of us will be around in 2020 to hear Syed Shahabuddin shouting, delirious with joy and excitement, "Well done Old Boy, we stand tallerbecause of you." Amen..

This is just the beginning of the appraisal of the phenomenon called Saiyid Hamid. He is far greater than the aggregate of all that has been written here. For a proper, more enduring study we would be needing an expert like Prof. Mushirul Hasan, whose work on the 19th-20th century great Muslims of India and the tenor and texture of Muslim lives, is a remarkable feat. Prof. Hasan is here, but only as Sylvester Stallone appearing for two minutes in a Hindi film. Let us hope Prof. Hasan has his eyes firmly set on Saiyid Saheb as he had earlier on Dr Mukhtar Ansari, Maulana Azad, Mohammad Alior Maulana Mahmood Hasan of earlier generations. But, let our hero first dash across the magic 2020. So heave. Let's go. Claps. Cheer on, Syed Shahabuddin!

PS: Bring your ears close to me. Look over your shoulders. I hope nobody islistening. You see, this is my 60th birthday. Of late I have not been keeping too well. Don't count me in for the 2020 party. That is one difference betweenthe patrician (Saiyid Hamid) and the plebian (your's truly, this reviewer).
