Based on the results of the written part of Civil Services (Main) Examination, 2008 held by the Union Public Service Commission in October-November, 2008 and the interviews for Personality Test held in March, 2009, a total 791 candidates qualified for the appointment. Looking at the above statistics, it is evident that there is a noticeable upward trend in terms of percent of Muslim representation from last few years. Like national trend, woman also leads the rank of successful Muslim candidates. We are seeing 4 to 5 Muslim women among the successful candidates. That is very good news.

Women bag top three positions in civil services exam

NEW DELHI: It was woman power all the way in the civil services (main) examination 2008, as they took the top three ranks in one of the toughest competitive exams in the country, officials said Monday.

Shubhra Saxena, a graduate from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee, and Sharandeep Kaur Brar, post-graduate from Panjab University, were ranked first and second in the civil services (main) examination 2008, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) announced here. Kiran Kaushal was ranked third.

Among the male candidates, physically challenged Varinder Kumar Sharma was ranked first and overall bagged the fourth position.

Shubhra Saxena cleared the exam in her second attempt. Sharma, a bachelor of engineering from Punjab Engineering College, cleared the exam in his first attempt.

According to the UPSC, which conducts the examination, 318,843 candidates applied for this examination and nearly half had appeared for the preliminary examination.

As many as 11,849 candidates qualified for the main written examination held in October-November 2008.

A total of 2,140 candidates were selected for the personality test conducted in March and of these 625 male and 166 female candidates cleared the final tests.

These candidates have now been recommended for appointment to the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Police Service (IPS) and central services, Group 'A' and Group 'B'.

"The top 25 candidates include 15 males and 10 females. Educational qualification-wise they comprise 12 candidates belonging to commerce, management, humanities, science and social sciences," the UPSC said here in a press statement.

"Nine candidates were from engineering and four candidates from medical science background."

The successful candidates include 364 general (including 13 physically challenged candidates), 236 Other Backward Classes (including 7 physically challenged candidates), 130 Scheduled Castes (SC) and 61 Scheduled Tribes candidates.

Executive Council of AMU approved the draft representation by majority votes

Aligarh May 3: At the emergent special meeting the Executive Council of the Aligarh Muslim University today approved the draft representation by majority votes. Thirteen members supported the resolution and 8 members dissented.

Presided over by the AMU Vice Chancellor, Prof. P. K. Abdul Azis the meeting was held to consider and approve the draft representation of the University in response to the notice served by the visitor under section 13 of the AMU Act 1920.

It was also decided to permit the members of the Executive Council to offer suggestion if any, before 4 p.m. on May 4, 2009 regarding the draft representation prepared by the University for onward transmission to the Visitor through the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India.

Earlier AMU had received a notice from the Hon'ble Visitor expressing her desire to cause an inquiry to ascertain certain facts in regard to the situation prevalent in the University including certain allegations against the Vice Chancellor as also the counter allegation against some members of the Executive Council.

The Ministry has asked the University to make the representation in regard to its notice duly approved by Executive Council by 5^th of May so that the same could be forwarded to the Visitor.

The University representation includes factual position as per University records on each point raised in the petition. The representation indicates that there are no financial and administrative irregularities whatsoever.

Workshop for Private and Traditional Health Practitioners of Rural Areas of Aligarh

Aligarh, May 1: Keeping in mind the epidemics season of diarrhea diseases and malaria, an "Orientation Workshop for Private and Traditional Health Practitioners of Rural Areas of Aligarh" was organized at Rural Health Training Centre (RHTC), Jawan under Department of Community Medicine, J.N. Medical College. Prof. Zulfia Khan, Programme Coordinator welcomed the guests and participants. She discussed the aims and objectives of this orientation workshop. Prof. M. Ashraf Malik, Principal & Chief Medical Superintendent, J.N. Medical College appreciated the efforts of Department of Community Medicine for rendering health services to the poor people. Prof. Abu Qamar Siddiqui, Dean Faculty of Medicine has highlighted the importance of such type of training workshop in providing the health services to the community. Dr. S. Manazir Ali, Chairman Department of Pediatrics answered the queries of private practitioners regarding management of diarrhea, cholera and typhoid. Dr. Iqbal M. Khan, Organizing Secretary presented vote of thanks.

Prof. Abu Qamar Siddiqui, Dean Faculty of Medicine and Prof. M. Ashraf Malik, Principal & Chief Medical Superintendent, J.N. Medical College also released a book entitled "Disaster Management- A Public Health Emergency". This book has been written by Dr. M. Athar Ansari, Reader in the Department of Community Medicine, J.N. Medical College. They congratulated the author for bringing out the book and hoped that in the current scenario, the book will provide a compact account of various aspects of Disaster Management to health professional and students.

Dr. Abdul Razzaque Siddiqui, Dr. Suboohi Afzal, Dr. Anees Ahmad, Dr. M. Salman Shah, Dr. S. Hasan Nawaz, Dr. Sakeena Mushfiq, Dr. Sumeet Dixit discussed various aspects of prevention and control of these epidemic diseases. The interns posted at R.H.T.C. also organized a poster exhibition on these diseases. Mr. Salman Khalil and Dr. S. Ziaur Rahman also attended the workshop.

Alvida A distingished Alig - Prof. Qamar Rais

ASA All , The news of Prof Qamar Rais (Qamar bhai to many of us ) sad demise is a big loss to Alig community .Qamar bhai was a  towering personality in  the literary and cutural field .I have had the pleasure of knowing Qamar bhai since his student days .Of course he was much senior to me in age .I first lerant about him when he edited Aligarh Magazine Urdu .He was also ediror of Jamia Urdu's jourmnal Adeeb .Aftter completing his PH D  in Urdu under the guidance of Prof Rasheed Ahmad Siddiqui Qamar bhai  joined Delhi university .Prof Khwaja Ahmad Farooqui  the then Hear of Urdy Department of Delhi university recognized his potential and vwas instrumental in bringing him to Delhi university .Qamar bhai spent rest of his colourful life in the capital  and over the yeaers he bacame an integral part of  Delhi's intellectual and cultural life .After retitement from university he remained  avtively associated with so many organzations and institutions  like Delhi Urdu Academy ,Anjuman Taraqqi Urdu  Hind ,Ghalib Institute ,Urdu Council etc .It was a real pleasure to meet and interact with him at various litearsy functions and prrogrammes and he always met like an elder brother in a true Aligarh spirit ..My wife Salma was paricularly impressed when as Vice Chairman of Delhi Urdy Academy he  came forward to greet us  while he was surrounded by so many people and  many VIPs were around .This was the graetness of Qamar Bhai . which made him a loveable persona.llity .Incidentally our last meeting took place just before a week at a function of Urdu Academy .Qamar Bhai's death is a big loss to Urdu world ..and Alig community .Let us pray for his maghfirat .and offer our sincere condolences to the bereaved family .Alvida Qamar bhai .I find it hard to think of a literary programme in Delhi without  Qamar bhai . Honorary “Colonel” is bestowed upon AMU VC by the National Cadet Corps (NCC).

Aligarh April 29: The Directorate General, National Cadet Corps, Ministry of Defence, Government of India has decided to bestow upon Prof. P. K. Abdul Azis, Vice Chancellor, Aligarh Muslim University, the honorary rank of "Colonel" in the National Cadet Corps (NCC).

Lt. General Prakash S. Chaudhary, Director General of the National Cadet Corps informed the AMU Vice Chancellor that in the armed forces, the colonel of regiment is an honour normally conferred upon distinguished and very senior officers and hoped that this appointment will bring you in still close contact with the NCC units in your University and enable you to interact with officers and cadets to help and guide them to uphold the idea of the NCC.

The honorary Colonel rank will be presented in a special function.
