The Department of Applied Geosciences is seeking to fill vacancies in the broad fields of structural geology and tectonics, hydrogeology, petrophysics, applied geophysics, and geochemistry, with field-based, experimental and theoretical approaches.

Applicants are expected to show a proven track record as excellent educators at undergraduate and higher level, and to have research interests broadly related to petroleum geosciences, applied hydrogeology or economic geology.

GUtech offers an international and dynamic environment with an extensive research network provided by RWTH Aachen University. Your Duties:

Your duties will include teaching undergraduate courses and contribute to the development of postgraduate courses at MSc-/PhD-level in consultation with the Head of Department and close collaboration with the Professors at RWTH Aachen University. There should be evidence that the candidate excels at all levels of teaching including under- and post-graduate courses as well as thesis supervision.

Assistant Professor

Applicants should hold a PhD degree or equivalent and demonstrated excellence in teaching undergraduate courses, as well as experience with teaching post-graduate courses as well as thesis supervision. Candidates are expected to be good researchers and should have contributed to the advancement of research internationally.

Lecturer

Press Note Aligarh Muslim University

Aligarh, April 6: The Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University, Prof. P. K. Abdul Azis has created a record by convening fifteen meetings of the Executive Council in a short span of 22 months after assuming charge as the Vice Chancellor. The average meetings per year were only 3 during the previous period.

Addressing the first meeting of the Executive Council on July 14, 2007 Professor Azis had assured all concerned that the statutory bodies like the Executive Council, the University Court, the Finance Committee, the Academic Council, CASR and the Board of Studies would be convened regularly and a culture of democratic participation will be established.

The AMU administration has clarified this point in the context of misleading statements seen in the press that the Executive Council meetings are not held in AMU and the Vice Chancellor is running the University in an autocratic style. The fact is contrary to this propaganda.

It is to point out that all the University bodies have been fully revived in accordance with the best democratic traditions and as per the University Act, Statutes and Ordinances. Besides overwhelming large number of EC meetings, the University has convened four meetings of the Academic Council.

Since February 2008 onwards a group of eight members of the Executive Council began to function as a pressure group, trying to disturb the functioning of the EC in the discharge of its statutory functioning. Their behaviour is against the best tradition and interests of this University.

They have prevented the discussion on the agenda items under the guise of discussions on action taken report that never used to take more than five minutes.

The special meeting of the Executive Council convened on 18.02.2009 could not be held for want of a quorum. Seeing the absence of two members that would have given the meeting the required quorum, EC members Mr. Waseem Ahmad, Professor Habibur Rahman, Dr. Hafiz Mohd. Ilyas and Mr. Jamshed Siddiqui who were available in the campus, deliberately abstained from participating in the meeting. Had they attended the meeting and presented their opinion the EC would have given due consideration to their views. By absenting themselves they have forfeited this right on their own.

These members again did not attend the adjourned meeting held on 24.02.2009, although they were present in the campus, they again abstained and willfully conducted a press conference in the University at the same time.

The Council had adopted the general law of meetings that 'members present shall form the quorum in adjourned meeting to transact the essential business listed on the agenda'. In fact the agenda listed for the special meeting held on 18.02.2009 was already listed for meetings convened on 05.07.2008 and 30.08.2008.

The University administration has always reflected its commitment to the democratic functioning of the Executive Council. The administration feels that it is the duty of every member to attend the EC meeting and participate in the decision making process in a democratic way.

It may be noted that members elected from the University Court were not regularly attending the EC meetings and two nominees of the Visitor were also not keen in attending the meetings and were absent in all the last three EC meetings convened by the University.

Art Exhibition by Hobbies Workshop organized at Kennedy Auditorium

Aligarh April 1: An Art Exhibition by Hobbies Workshop, GEC, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh was organized at Kennedy Auditorium Foyer in collaboration with the OCTA (a group of eight students from Fine Art Department, AMU). The special feature of the exhibition is installation called "EMPATHY" which concerns the patho-ontological condition of a rickshaw puller. The other works on display vary from formalistic experimentation, romantic expressionist gestures, confessional portraits, calligraphy, miniature and assemblage. Prof. A. M. K. Shahryar, noted poet and lyricist was the Chief Guest of the programme.

The show is dynamic in the sense that it touches various genres and mediums of visual art from conventional painting, assemblage, photography and installation. The Exhibition, hopefully, would encourage the students of Fine Art and inspire more visibility of such art related activities in the campus. The Exhibition comprises the paintings of Aasia Wahid, Amit Kumar, Rusnee Susaro, Shabina Parween, Afzal Ahmad, Nikhat Noor, Sabiuha Jameel and Surida A-Sae. The paintings of guest artist Ruby Khawaja, Mumtaz and Shahejahan were also found enchanting to the viewers.

Prof. Abul Kalam Qasmi, Coordinator, General Education Centre welcomed the guests while M. Shahbaz Hussain, Student Convener of the Exhibition proposed a vote of thanks.

One day workshop on “Rejuvenating Language Departments” at AMU

Aligarh March 31: Delivering the keynote address at the inaugural function of one day special workshop on "Rejuvenating Language Departments" at AMU Professor O. N. Kaul, former Director of Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysore said that globalization does not mean the dominance of the language and culture. It has opened up avenues for the development of various languages and cultures and for their use in different domains.

He said that the English is presently a dominant language used in cyber space but it has created a healthy competition for the development of other languages and facilitated their use in internet. It is possible to meet the challenges and develop internet translation tools so that the information on internet is made available in different languages.

Prof. Kaul pointed out that there is a great potential in department of Modern Indian Languages, comparative literature and European languages which can be used in interdisciplinary and short term need based courses beneficial for the students and researchers in Linguistics and the regional languages.

He has suggested to develop integrated courses in language and literature both at introduction as well as advanced levels.

Inaugurating the Workshop, AMU Vie Chancellor Prof. P. K. Abdul Azis said that the languages are core to nurturing human civilization and culture. He said that the languages play a big role in relationships.

Prof. Azis said that India is a multi-lingual multi-cultural and multi-ethnic country and India's beauty is in its diversity. It is a challenge to preserve the plurality and all efforts need to be made in this direction.

Prof. Azis also said that the communication revolution is also playing a great role by TV, Mobile and Internet.

While welcoming the delegates Prof. A. R. Fatihi, Chairman, department of Linguistics said that this department provides an opportunity to advance teaching and research in linguistics. The UGC has recognized it as one of the leading post graduate programmes in India is scholarly quality and in effectiveness of teaching PhD candidates and awarded SAP to the Department of Linguistics.

Prof. S. Imtiaz Hasnain highlighted the objectives of the Workshop and said that the Workshop is our modest attempt towards a reassessment of the aims of the language study and a consideration of the content of the curriculum of the languages being taught in order to make the language teaching more viable, attractive and meaningful.

AMU Regisrar Prof. V. K. Abdul Jaleel said that AMU has decided to establish a school of languages. He suggested that credit and grading system at PG level should be introduced in AMU in the Faculties of Arts and Social Sciences also.

Prof. Jaleel highlighted the importance of translation as an important tool to enhance understanding between languages and cultures and suggested that language departments can offer courses in translation.

In his presidential remarks Prof. A. R. Kidwai, Director, UGC Academic Staff College said that the founder of this great seat of learning, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan played a role of social engineering. He established Scientific Society and the Society translated several books on agriculture technology for common masses in their own language.

He said that the un employability of our students is a great challenge in higher education. He suggested for the start of remedial classes and develop a sense of book reading in students.

On this occasion AMU Vice Chancellor Prof. P. K. Abdul Azis released "Selected Bibliography of Urdu Language and Linguistics" and "Language Vitality in South Asia" edited by A. R. Fatihi and a profile of the Department of Linguistics.

Dr. Masood Ali Beg proposed a vote of thanks. Mrs. Shabana Hameed conducted the inaugural session.

Faculty of Medicine, AMU wins Inter Faculty Cricket Tournament

Aligarh: The Faculty of Medicine, Aligarh Muslim University has won the Inter Faculty Cricket Tournament here on Monday being played at Wellington Cricket Pavilion.

Medicine Faculty team defeated Engineering Faculty by three wickets. Winning the toss the Faculty of Engineering team decided to bat first has scored 127 runs in stipulated 20 overs. Rehan and Ajmal scored 18 runs each. Dr. Khursheed took 4 wickets for 39 runs.

In reply the Faculty of Medicine achieved the target for the loss of seven wickets. Dr. Wasim scored 34 and Dr. M.U. Rabbani scored 22 runs respectively. Najeeb and Ajmal took two wickets each. Man of the match award was given to Dr. Rabbani while Dr. Khursheed was declared man of the series.
