Sporting A Beard is Talibanization Says SC Judge M. Katju

On a plea of a bay to sport beard Justice M. Katju Said:-
"We don't want talibans in the country.Tomorrow a girl student may come and say she wants to wear a burqa, can we allow it".

May I ask this gentle man to have a glimpse on the photographs of our beloved Prime Minister Honble Manmohan Singh Ji. If persons sporting a beard are talibans then the highest chair of our country is under great danger. The roots of evil that are nurturing the shady grey matters of the henious brains, trying to devide the country in the name of relegion, are in need of sharp axe and not the innocent beards.

Prof. Farhat Basir Khan awarded

NEW DELHI: Jamia Millia Islamia is going places, quite literally. After Loveleen Tandan, the co-director of Slumdog Millionaire and an alumna of the AJK Mass Communication Research Centre at Jamia who recently walked the red carpet at the Oscars, a team from the same institute is headed for Cannes next month.

Farhat Basir Khan, Professor of Media and Communication at the MCRC, and his two students, Neal Kartik and Pranab Kumar Aich, are going to represent Asia at the Sony World Photography Awards (SWPA) ceremony.

The SWPA has created an initiative -- "Student Focus" -- that provides a unique opportunity for universities and their students to get experience within the professional field. The programme stretches across the globe.

In this competition, students had to submit photographs on the environmental issues specific to their country. From each continent, ten countries are involved, with one university representing each country. The two winning students along with their professor from each continent will be flown to Cannes for workshops and lectures during SWPA Festival between April 14 and 19.

The Jamia team won the top honours for the Asia continent after beating top universities from nine countries, and will now attend the grand finale at Cannes to try and bring home the World Photography Award. The students presented pictures they took in Orissa underlining the issue of deforestation.

Prof. Khan, who has taught some prominent names of the film and television industry like Shah Rukh Khan, Roshan Abbas and Lovleen Tandan, feels this is a proud moment for both India and Jamia.

"It is a brilliant time for photography in India, especially after the advent of digital technology. Indian photographers never had it better. Their works are now being shown in some of the best galleries across the world," he adds.

Note: Prfessor Farhat Basir Khan is an alumnus of the Aligarh Muslim University. He did his M.Sc in Zoolgoy and a son of Mr Basir Ahmad Khan, Retd Teacher of Physics

B.Tech ZH College of Engineering and Technology Aligarh Muslim University Aligarh accredited excellence by National Board of Accreditation (NBA)

ALIGARH, March 18: All the B.Tech. programmes of the Zakir Husain College of Engineering and Technology at the Aligarh Muslim University have been accredited with excellence by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA).

Professor M.T. Ahmed, Principal of the College, said that it is very rare that in the first attempt, all the B.Tech. programme of a college are sanctioned accreditation for a accreditation for a maximum possible period of two years.

The National Board Accreditation is one of the prestigious programmes of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), which has been set up to assess the qualitative competence of technical educational institutions at all the levels of education. One of the major objectives of NBA accreditation is to continuously encourage technical institutions to strive towards attainment of excellence. It helps in improving the quality and effectiveness of the educational programmes. Accreditation of an institution gives multifold advantages. The degree awarded by an accredited institution is recognized not only in India, but also in foreign countries. It helps the students' employment prospects and their acceptability in the market. At present, it is also helping the institutions in getting lucrative funding on the submitted research projects from various governmental bodies, like, MHRD, DST and UGC, etc.

NBA's decision on providing accreditation to all the seven Undergraduate Programmes for a maximum possible period of five years was communicated to the College by the NBA. This will help the institution in boosting the image of the College and help in its strive of becoming a top ranking institution of the country.

International symposium in Biochemistry

Aligarh March 17: Delivering the keynote address in the inaugural session of the two-day international symposium on "Free Radicals in Health and Disease", Professor Elisabeth Dendle from Munich, Germany said that arteriogenesis is the only natural way to compensate the loss of an artery. Upon occulsion of an artery the blood flow is redirected into pre existing arteriolar anastomoses, which thereupon starts to grow.

She pointed out that the main trigger for collateral artery growth is the increased fluid shear stress experienced by the endothelial cell layer of the pre existing arteriokes. However, nitric oxide is known to be anti-proliferative to vascular smooth muscle cells.

While presiding over the inaugural session AMU Vice Chancellor Prof. P. K. Abdul Azis said that the theme of the symposium is most appropriate in the present scenario when the radicals are just beginning to be recognized as important agents for induction of various diseases including Cancer. The field of health research must become translatable into products and strategies not only to reduce human mortality and morbidity rate but also substantially enhancing life span and quality of life. He hoped that the symposium shall go a long way in encouraging our research scholars to achieve greater heights of academic accomplishment.

Prof. Azis appreciated the efforts of the Department of Biochemistry in the field of research and said that the products of this department are doing well in USA and other countries. He urged the researchers to register their patents.

Prof. Hari S. Sharma of Netherland said that he is an alumnus of this institution and did his M. Sc. in Biochemistry. He has presented a paper on Recent Advances in Genomics and i-Gene Thalysis" and said that now the modern genomic and bioinformative techniques can be used in biomedical research.

In his welcome address Professor Masood Ahmad, Organizing Secretary of the Symposium said that the faculty members of this department have published more than forty quality papers in year 2008 and also have taken up the first batch of M. Sc. in Enzyme and Fermentation Technology. Due to impressive track record this department has been selected for special funding from both the UGC and DST under their DRS and FIST programmes.

He said that one M. Sc. student got selected for summer training at USA and pointed out that fifty percent of the biochemistry fraternity of AMU holding the PhD. degree is presently residing in North America and Europe. Moreover, among all the department of the AMU Department of Biochemistry is the one whose maximum numbers of graduates have found their post doctoral assignment in USA.

Professor Absar Mustafa Khan, Dean Faculty of Life Sciences and Professor S. M. Hadi, Chairman, department of Biochemistry also addressed the function.

Prof. Tariq M. Haqqi, University of South Carolina, Columbia, USA, Prof. P. Kuppaswamy, USA, Dr. Michael Moorhouse, Netherland, Prof. Suresh C. Tyagi, USA, Dr. Kamna Srivasalari, AIIMS, New Delhi, Dr. S. Adhikari, BARC, Mumbai, Dr. S. K. Goel, Lucknow, Prof. Qamar Rahman, Lucknow, Dr. Shahid Jameel, New Delhi and several distinguished bio-scientists are participating in the symposium.

On this occasion,Prof Elisabeth released the magazine Bioquom and Prof P.K.Abdul Azis released the souvenir and abstract book of the symposium.

Digital Resource Centre, Closed Circuit TV and Campus wide Online Catalogue at MA Library, AMU inaugurated

Aligarh March 16: The Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University Prof. P. K. Abdul Azis today inaugurated a Digital Resource Centre, Closed Circuit TV and Campus wide Online Catalogue at Maulana Azad Library of the Aligarh Muslim University.

Addressing the function Prof. P.K. Abdul Azis said that the new building of the Central Library equipped with internet facility will be constructed at a cost of Rs. Five Crore to provide better space to students, researchers and faculty members.

He said that the University is planning digital classrooms in the next two years and urged the faculty members to make this University a centre of excellence and help regain the glory of this historic institution.

Professor N. Laxman Rao of the Osmania University, Hyderabad said on this occasion that this is the first university library in India which opens from 8 O'clock morning to 2 O'clock night. He said that this library has created a history to install CCTV to maintain the functioning of the library.

Earlier, Professor Shabahat Husain, Librarian-in-charge, Mulana Azad Library said that the digital resources have now become an essential part of library collection. He said that we have installed ten systems to begin with in order to access to the digital resources loaded on to a high power server.

Prof. Shabahat said that Maulana Azad Library has an 'On-line Catalogue' for the past few years but its usability was restricted to the library premises only. Using the server of the Computer Centre, a link has been created on the internet to enable faculty members and students to access the on-line catalogue from anywhere in the campus.

He said that the modern CCTV installed in the Library not only gives the pictures of the different areas of the Library but also has facilities of recording and infrared photography. The present system of CCTV is also a boon for the security of the invaluable collection of manuscripts, as in case of any intrusion in odd hours, the system will send messages to three authorized persons.

He said that another important task ahead is the digitization of about 16000 manuscripts and about 5000 rare books in different languages.

Prof. Husain informed that the Vice Chancellor has approved the installation of automatic security gate through which no body would be able to take out any un-issued book outside the library by using unfair means.

This move is, however, not an easy task because every book of the gigantic collection of the Library will have to be provided with an electronic device which is a time consuming and painstaking job.

Prof. M. Saleemuddin of the Biotechnology Unit and Professor M. Saud Alam Qasmi, Dean Faculty of Theology also addressed the function. Nawab Ibne Saeed Khan of Chhatari and Prof. Shamim Ahmad, former acting Vice Chancellor and Professor A. A. Nizami, Dean Faculty of Engineering also graced the occasion.

Report of Extra Mural Lecture at Dept. Islamic Studies AMU Aligarh

By the Name of Allah Taala

Extra-Mural Lecture in the Dept. of Islamic Studies (A.M.U)

The Scope and Character of Modern Science-Implications for Islamic
Civilization.

Under the Extra-Mural Lecture programme organized by the Dept. of
Islamic Studies (A.M.U. Aligarh) on 26th Feb. 2009, Prof. Kunwar Muhammad Yusuf Amin (Dept.of Ilmul Adviah, A.K.Tibbiya College, A.M.U.) delivered a lecture on the Scope and Character of Modern Science-Implications for Islamic Civilization. The programme was presided over by Dr. Muhammad Zaki Kirmani, Director, Centre for Studies on Science (Aligarh)

Delivering the Lecture, Prof. Yusuf Amin stated that modern science
should be absorbed by the Eastern Civilization in a recasted manner with ethical values guiding both the selection of research topics and the practical application of scientific findings. He further observed that the new model of science may help the West also, which itself wants to give a new shape to science so that grave physical problems like Global Warming and cultural problems like the loss of meaning and ethical sense may be avoided.

In his presidential remarks, Dr. Zaki Kirmani said that
although it may not be said so explicitly but western modern science
inculcates materialism and rejection of supra-human guidance. So science should undergo a rebirth, combining observation with divine guidance.

Earlier, welcoming the guests and participants, Prof. Zafarul Islam,
Chairman, Dept. of Islamic Studies stressed the need for subordinating science to religious values and for the development of science in such a way which could benefit humanity. In his introductory remarks, Dr. Abdul Majid Khan, Convener of the Extra-Mural Lectures called for imbuing self-confidence among scholars for undertaking critical analysis of modern western science. He also emphasized the need of abjuring the blind imitation of western scientific paradigms in order to save humanity from the worst
catastrophes. The lecture followed by a lively discussion joined by a number of scholars and researchers. The programme was attended by the faculty members, students and research scholars of the different Depts. of the University and other institutions in addition to that of Islamic Studies and Arabic.
