JNMC AMU Aligarh Will Face Committee for Feasibility Regarding Upgradation

Aligarh July 27: The AMU Vice Chancellor Prof. P.K. Abdul Azis has constituted a high power committee to prepare the feasibility report regarding the upgradation of the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College to the status of All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. The report will be presented before Central Technical Team.

The decision to constitute the committee was taken at a special meeting presided over by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. P.K. Abdul Azis. Prof. S. Abrar Hasan, Dean Faculty of Medicine, Prof. M. Ashraf Malik, Principal and Chief Medical Superintendent, JNMC & Hospital and Prof. Pervez Mustajab, Officer on Special Duty also were present in the meeting.

The Dean, Faculty of Medicine, Prof. S. Abrar Hasan will be the Convener of the Committee constituted to prepare upgradation knity-grities. The other members of the proposed committee are - Principal & Chief Medical Superintendent, J.N. Medical College & Hospital, OSD (Development), Medical Superintendent, J.N. Medical College & Hospital, Chairman, Committee for Infrastructure Projects, MIC (Electricity), University Engineer, Building Department and Assistant Engineer, Water & Sewerage. Three medical experts were co-opted as extended members, they are - Prof. M.S. Valiathan, Professor Emeritus & Hony. Advisor, Manipal Life Science Centre, Manipal, Prof. A.K. Agrawal, Dean, Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi and Dr. B.K. Rao, Director, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi.

The Faculty of Medicine is the largest faculty in the University system and its Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College is uniquely suited for the proposed upgradation. It has all the basic infrastructure and sufficient staff to meet the necessary requirement.

The JN Medical College offers a wide range of courses that includes MBBS, BDS, MDS, MD, MS, Diploma in Nursing and Midwifery. At present post graduate courses are being offered in 23 departments of the college. The staff consists of 59 Professors, 51 Readers, 68 Lecturers, 89 Senior Residents and 429 Junior Residents besides 1300 non-teaching and Paramedical staff. Furthermore there is no tertiary medical institute between Delhi and Lucknow, a distance of about 700 kms.

J. N. Medical College Hospital is an 1155-bedded secondary care referral hospital which is already providing comprehensive medical care to a large number of patients. The popularity and the esteem of the hospital is evident by the fact that in the year 2007-08, a bulk of 3,86,347 patients attended its OPD, 29,876 patients were admitted with a high bed occupancy rate and 12,327 operations were carried out.

Forty seven years old J.N. Medical College hospital provides round the clock emergency services and has 55 beds in the casualty section along with three well-equipped emergency operation theatre, 24-hours Labour room facility along with attached eight beds paediatric nursery are also available. The Department of Radio Diagnosis provides diagnostic services and is equipped with MRI, Spiral Whole body CT Scan, Colour Doppler Ultrasonography etc. The Blood Bank of the hospital is also well equipped and facilities for blood matching are available round the clock. An eight-bedded Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and eight-bedded Coronary Care Unit (CCU) with all essential equipments is functioning along with a Paediatrics Dependency Unit (HDU).

Based on the initiative of the University which submitted a comprehensive proposal of Rs. 201.67 Crores to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare the Union Cabinet at its meeting held on February 5, 2009 has approved the upgradation of the J. N. Medical College to the level of an Institute of Medical Sciences at an estimated cost of Rs. 150 crores. As per the announcement made by the Union Minister, Mr. P. Chidambram, the upgradation was sanctioned under the second phase of the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojna (PMSSY).

Once the upgradation plan is in place, the J.N. Medical College will become one of the foremost Medical Institutions of the country where all facilities may be made available to the patients.

Anees Ansari elected AMU association president AMOUBA

Anees Ansari, IAS (retd.), was elected president of the
Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Old Boys' Association. Former
minister Syed Ali Asharafi was elected the vice-president of the
association. Besides, a seven-member executive committee was also
elected on the occasion.

Academic Council Resolution For Relaxation of 5% marks


ALIGARH, July 22: The Academic Council resolution relates to only relaxation of 5% marks at Master level and 5% at Graduate level under the term "Good Academic Record", coined by the UGC for visually and physically challenged categories of candidates when they apply for the post of Principal, professors, Readers, Lecturers, etc., in Central Universities. This in tune with the directives of the UGC in this regard and is considered for SC/ST. There was no discussion in the Academic Council regarding the reservation to SC/ST.
The position taken by the University is that being a minority institution the reservation for SC/ST does not apply to it and this has been made unequivocally clear by AMU in a recent communication to MHRD on the subject matter. So there is no need for any confusion. The Vice Chancellor said that the minority character of AMU will be fully protected.

V.C. Prof. P. K. Abdul Azis Murshidabad Visit


Aligarh July 22: A five member team of Aligarh Muslim University led by AMU Vice Chancellor Prof. P. K. Abdul Azis paid a three-day visit to Kolkata and Murshidabad and discussed various issues relating to establishment of the AMU Centre at Murshidabad with the Chief Minister, Minister of Higher Education, Finance Minister and other officials of the West Bengal.
In a meeting with the West Bengal Chief Minister, Budhadeb Bhattacharjee, Prof. Abdul Azis explained that the University will replicate AMU Model that blends school system with that of higher and professional education including provision for girls' polytechnic and a Women's College. The Aligarh model also reflects modern education and secularism as its philosophical ethos. The Vice Chancellor presented a memento of Sir Syed's photograph inscribed on it to the Chief Minister.
The Chief Minister, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has welcomed the AMU move to establish the Murshidabad Centre and promised all possible help including financial assistance. The Chief Minister informed that it is he who has requested the Union Finance Minister, Pranab Mukherji to provide a financial package to the AMU's Murshidabad Centre so that it can become operational. He urged that the new Centre should also reflect the culture of the region.
The AMU team which comprised of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. P. K. Abdul Azis, Prof. Pervez Mustajab, Controller of Examinations and Admission, Prof. N. A. K. Durrani, Media Advisor, Prof. Ikram Husain, former Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Technology and Prof. Jawed Akhtar, Dean, Faculty of Management Studies also held discussion on various parameters with Minister for Higher Education, Mr. Sudarshan Roy Choudhury and Finance Minister, Dr. Asim Kumar Dasgupta of West Bengal government present along with the Principal Secretary for Higher Education Mr. Satish Choudhury Tiwari and Alia University Vice Chancellor Dr. Syed Shamsul Alam.
While addressing a Press conference soon after the meeting, Mr. Sudarshan Roy Choudhury said that the AMU system of education will contribute meaningfully towards the educational upliftment of the region. It will retain its distinct hallmark that combines school education with higher education. The new Centre in the due course of time have the potential of becoming an independent University.
Prof. Ikram Husain and Prof. Jawaid Akhtar presented an extensive PowerPoint presentation that covered the profile of the University, the vision, its philosophy, its history, its current status and the roadmap for the proposed Murshidabad Campus.
Minister of State for Minority Development and Madrasa Education, Mr. Abdus Sattar hosted a lunch to the visiting team and held discussions on the problems of minorities' education and the challenges ahead. He has welcomed the establishment of AMU Centre and volunteered all help to the University to translate the proposal into reality.
Prof. Abdul Azis while thanking the overwhelming response the University is receiving from all quarters in the state of West Bengal said that if the state government transfers the land free from any encumbrances within a month, the AMU will start its operation from 2010-2011 session. It may likely to begin with Secondary or Higher Secondary level and subsequently will introduce other levels in a phased manner, and all these after conducting a survey of the educational need of the region. Prof. Azis further pointed out that there is no reservation for Muslims presently in AMU. The institution keep its doors open for all communities irrespective of caste, creed and religion.
The Old Boys Association of Kolkata hosted a dinner at the Grand Oberoi Hotel. It was attended by about 40 prominent old boys. Mr. Waquar Ahmad Khan, General Secretary, AMU Old Boys' Association of Kolkata has expressed happiness on the AMU decision to establish its special Centre in Murshidabad and said that this step will go a long way in the direction of empowerment of the most marginalized social class of our country.
While addressing the issue, Vice Chancellor, Prof. Azis urged the old boys to work at the grassroots level and establish schools of all kinds including primary, secondary and senior secondary so that a feeder system for entry into the AMU's Murshidabad Centre is in place for the larger benefit of the deprived community. The grand edifice of AMU stands on the act of the generous philanthropy of the community of yesteryears and to build a world class AMU Campus in Murshidabad. The present community and the old boys should replicate the philanthropy of similar magnitude, he added.
Accompanied by the Principal Secretary, Higher Education, Mr. S. C. Tiwari, the team visited Murshidabad and held discussion with Mr. Pervez Siddiqui, District Magistrate and other officials of the district including block officials of the proposed site.
Mr. Pervez explained in detail the location and its distances from the highway, Railway Station and other locational logistics and said that currently the land is owned by Farakka Barrage Project Authority and hence getting it transferred to AMU will not be a major constrain. Mr. S. C. Tiwari informed that the government of West Besngal has already written to the Central Government that the two pieces of unused Farakka Barrage land together comprising 302 acres was identified by the State government to be transferred to the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India and from it to AMU.
The Aligarh Muslim University team visited the spot of the land identified by the Govt. of West Bengal situated in Suti (Jungipur). The land belongs to the Central Government as part of Farakka Barrage Water Project. Besides Mr. S. C. Tiwari, Principal Secretary Education, Mr. Pervez Siddiqui, District Magistrate and other District and block officials, Mr. Moinul Hassan, Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) and a resident of Murshidabad who has played a decisive role in favour of setting up the Murshidabad Centre also accompanied the AMU visiting team.
The team inspected the proposed site and made note of the important details including its proximity to National Highway No. 34, Railway Station and the security and other logistics related issues.
The three day visit of the AMU team has borne fruitful results as it has reinvigorated the State Government's interest and commitment to the education of minorities in general and in the AMU Murshidabad Centre in particular. It has generated a great deal of goodwill among the concerned officials involved in addressing the issue of the proposed Centre. The visit has kindled new hope and enthusiasm among thousands of AMU Alumni spread across West Bengal.
A host of prominent leaders of the community met Vice Chancellor Prof. P. K. Abdul Azis and extended all support for the AMU expansion initiative. They included Mr. Saud Alam, President, Milli Council, Mr. Haroon Rashid of Al-Falah Mission, Political Activists Mr. Mohammad Sohrab, Ex-MLA of Murshidabad and Member of Parliament of Kishanganj Mr. Asrarul Haque and others engaged in promoting education and empowerment of the excluded social class.

The purpose of "The Aligarh Forum" is to provide a platform to all- who are inspired by Sir Syed Ahmad khan's Aligarh Movement, who aspire and desire to work for the betterment of his Movement's embodiment, The Aligarh Muslim university as well as for promoting enlightened ideals of education, research and service to the community. We welcome them all who wish to promote these ethos through their valuable contributions.

The Aligarh Forum believes in broad-minded toleration; of thoughts, of visions, of ideas, and of inclusiveness. Based on these cherished humane principles of Sir Syed and of Aligarh Muslim university's central character, we invite and welcome all to engage among themselves with healthy, hearty and enlightened exchange of views, discussions / debates on the Aligarh Muslim university related issues in particular and on the overall condition of Indian Muslims in general.

We sincerely intend to remain transparent, honest and unbiased. And we dearly wish from our members to follow the same code of ethics. Our Forum will be a "moderated" forum, and which means that the postings of our members will be first screened for any indecent language and unfounded contents before an approval.

Meet The Founder and Moderator

We have two Moderators on this forum; I am the founder/owner of this forum, but have invited Dr.Suhaib Siddiqi to join me as the second Moderator.
We both have studied at AMU up to the graduation level, but we both went out of AMU for our Ph.Ds. Our brief sketches are;
Razi Raziuddin
I am a research scientist at the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health, USA. My field of interest is cancer biology. I am a rare blend of Aligarh Muslim University as well as Banaras Hindu University; all my early eduction up to M.Sc. were from AMU; and Ph.D. ( Biochemistry) from BHU. I came to the USA in 1980, and reside/ live in Maryland,USA with my family.
I am a "fourth generation" Alig; my great grand-father entered M.A.O. college in 1898 and had the honor of seeing the great grand old man, Sir Syed Ahmad khan. Since then, for the last one-hundred and ten years, the extended family has had produced over sixty-seventy AMU graduates. I was raised in an environment of academicians, literary and religious scholars and social/ community activists, most of whose members were always found engaged in establishing schools/ libraries/ mosques etc, along side their other indulgences of writing articles, books and Urdu poetry.
I am simply a product of my family background. My passion, too, remains the same; community activism, Urdu poetry, literature, political sciences/ history and religious philosophies. Along sides these passions, professionally I remain an active science researcher. I consider myself as a very routine kind of ordinary Indian, nothing special, nothing unusual to catch anyone's eye and/or imagination.

Suhaib M. Siddiqi

I head a section as Director of Organic Chemistry of a Massachusetts-based biotechnology company. I am an Alig from elementary to M.Sc. level, and a Ph.D. in chemistry from Vienna, Austria. Since 1989 I live in the USA with my family.

I come from a very literary family background; my father,Ibn-e-Farid, a professor at AMU, was a well-known Urdu literature critic, and my mother founded a Urdu magazine called"Hijaab". Urdu runs in the family as by chance I have a wife who too holds a Ph.D. in Urdu literature. So my family background and environment was always very literary and intellectual. I guess it runs into me as I too find myself absorbed with books, research articles and debating forums on multiple disciplines of religious, political and literary interests.
