Anti-Communalism Day at Aligarh

PRESS RELEASE

ALIGARH 28.02.2009 : On the occasion of 7th Anniversary of Gujarat Genocide, The Millat Bedari Muhim Committee (MBMC), Aligarh & Intellectuals' Forum for Secular Democracy & Social Justice (IFSDSJ) observed 28th February 2009 as an 'Anti-Communalism Day' and organized a national seminar on "Recall Gujarat Genocide", on February 28, 2009, at 11:00 am at Kennedy Auditorium, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh. Mr. Harsh Mander, former IAS (Gujarat cadre) and renowned social activist & Humanist was the Chief Guest and delivered a key-note address. Mr. Vijay Pratap, social activist, was the guest of honour and Mr. Pramod Kumar, Industrialist and social activist, presided over the seminar.

Jasim Mohammad, president MBMC, presenting welcome address, said, "Gujarat incidents are still alive. It is shameful that culprits of Gujarat Genocide are not punished. They are not only freely roaming here and there but they are enjoying the power of Gujarat state." He further said, "Around five thousand victim families are living in relief camps in Gujarat under distress condition. And the state government is not ready to do any thing for them." He demanded that the victims should be given compensation as the victims of anti-Sikh riots in 1984 are given.

Mr. Harsh Mander, former IAS and renowned social activist, said, "The Gujarat Genocide has completed seven years but the government has failed to take any positive step for the betterment of the victims. I am witness that it is a crime to be a Muslim in Gujarat. Genocide is still continued in Gujarat. The victims are living under distress condition." He said, "The acknowledgment of killing of innocent children and women in 2002 in Gujarat by RSS, Bajrangdal and BJP with the help of then Gujarat government, the support and the compensation to the victims and the punishment to the culprits and the justice to the victims can bring the bad memories of Gujarat to end."

"We can never compromise with injustice and can not put up the arms to fight against injustice. We have to fight against injustice without any fear by the way of non-violence. Our constitution is in favour of people but the government authority is misusing it. We have to compel them to use it in favour of people." He also said, "We have been working for the justice. And we should take up the weapons of justice, love and humanity against all evils," Harsh Mander said.

Mr. Harsh Mander, Mr. Vijay Pratap and Mr. Pramod Kumar launched a National Weekly "Aligarin Times" which will be published by Jasim Mohammad, Chief Editor & Publisher.

Mr. Vijay Pratap, a social activist and guest of honour, condemned the Gujarat Genocide and said that communal minded politicians are trying to malign the secular character of India.

Prof. Shamim Ahmed, President, IFSDSJ said in his introductory remarks, "We have lost the faith in the investigative agencies of the country. They are playing in the hands of politicians. There should be one more inquiry committee to make justice between Banerjee committee and Nanavati committee." He also demanded that the case of former USA president, George W. Bush and Chief Minister of Guajrat, Narender Modi should be on trial in International court and they should be punished."

Presiding over the seminar, Mr. Pramod Kumar said that we, Hindu and Muslims should fight against injustice together. He also said that if it is propagated that at least ninety percent Hindus are fighting for the Muslim victims in Gujarat, communalism, itself, will be defeated in India.

Prof. Razaullah Khan, Patron of MBMC & Chairman Department of Civil Engineering, AMU, said that communal politicians have tarnished the secular face of India. Politicians have forgotten the democratic values and their constitutional duties. Addressing the Muslim students, he said that they have to always remember the message of peace and harmony which is taught in Holy Quran.

Dr. Mohammad Shahid, Ex-Secretary AMU Teachers' Association, said that the demolition of Babri Mosque and Gujarat Genocide 2002 are two dark chapters of Indian history. Indian polity has adopted biased attitude to deal with communalism and terrorism. Now injustice is everywhere in India and terrorism has been spreading very fast. Terrorism will continue, if the justice is not given to the victims because terrorism takes birth from the womb of injustice." He further said, "Narender Modi, Parveen Togadia, BJP, RSS, Bajrang dal and Abhinav Bharat are spreading terrorism in India. They should be banned."

Dr. F.S.Sherani, conducted the seminar and said that AMU Community is with the movement of Harsh Mander.

Mohsin Raza Khan, a journalist, presenting vote of thanks, said, "No political party is sincere to help victims and provide them justice." He said "we demand that the Anti-Communal Violence Bill should be passed in next parliament session."

AMU Old Boy successfully organizes U.P. State Equestrian Championship 2009

AMU Old Boy successfully organizes U.P. State Equestrian Championship 2009

The Uttar Pradesh State Equestrian Championship 2009 was organized by the Equestrian Association of Uttar Pradesh under the able stewardship of AMU Old Boy Mr. Salman Sayeed. The Championship was held from 28th January to 01st February 2009.

A soft spoken, polite boy of B.Com and MSW at AMU, an able Captain of AMU Riding Club who re-started the tracks for AMU Riding Clubs participations at the National level after a drought of participation of almost 14 years, a young sportsman who ventured to contest the MLA elections at the age of 23, a friend who never left anyone in need.

His leadership skills were never unnoticed by the community in general and people from Muzaffarnagar in particular. A young enthusiast, entrepreneur, businessman, agriculturalist and a social worker . Working towards progressive aspects and upliftment of the weaker sections of the society have been his very basic traits.

With a few friends and support from the Equestrian Federation of India, Chief, Col. Sarpartap Singh, he ventured to host and organize the U.P. State Equestrian Championship 2009 at S.D. P.G. College Grounds, Muzaffarnagar..

In the history of Uttar Pradesh, this was the landmark achievement in the Equestrian circuit after several decades. AMU had last ventured into hosting an event of such a magnitude was in 1989 under the able leadership of (Late) Md. Nasim Ansari Sb.

Besides, this was the first ever attempt by any civilian for daring to host such a huge event. Events of the state/regional/national level are organized only by the different units of the Indian Army and fewer times by the Police Academies.

Besides teams from Uttar Pradesh, there were teams like the Haryana Police, Border Security Forse (BSF), Olympic Riding Academy, RVC Meerut, RTS Saharanpur, RVC Hempur, ASC Bareilly, ASC Lucknow, ASC Meerut, Individual Units like Hasanwaalia's and most importantly, The Presidents Body Guard (PBG).

Another new feature that was incorporated in this championship was the participation of horses from rural parts of Uttar Pradesh. The crowds and governing authorities of Equestrian Sports were amazed to see the talent and training resource available in rural areas.

Apart from a number of different forms of Show Jumping Competitions, Tent-Pegging events, Dressage, Hacks and Gymkhana events, horse races were also included in the schedule of events. Rural training called the REBIA CHAAL was also showcased to the Judges for their inclusion into competitive forms in national events. The biggest crowd bustler was the Horse Dancing competition . It was so amazing for the Judges and spectators for a never seen wonder wigzags before the human eye.

It was very sad the Riding Team from AMU could not participate in the event. Though there were some eight Junior members who participated in Junior Gymkhana events and a Prize was won by Md. Faisal.

In the senior category, AMU Riding Club's, Athar A. Sulaiman won the Gold medal in EAUP Confined Tent Pegging, A bronze in Individual Tent Pegging, A shared silver medal with Maj. V.K. Mishra in Open Hacks, and a formidable 4th position in Sword Pegging Competition.

Athar A. Sulaiman has represented AMU thrice in the Nationals and was later named the U.P. State Equestrian Team Captain for the National Games to be held in June 2009.

Efforts of Mr. Salman Sayeed were commendable for arranging competent horses for the participants from AMU. Mr. Salman Sayeed himself on the final day of the competition gave a special display of Fire Tent Pegging.

The JURY for the events were:

  1. Wing Commander I.J. Lamba
  2. Col. Subhash Chand
  3. Lt. Col. B.P. Singh
  4. Col. Sarpartap Singh
  5. Brig. T.S. Hasanwalia
  6. Dr. Afaq A. Khan (former national player of AMU)
  7. Mr. Mashood Ali Khan (Ex-Capt, Riding Club 1983)
  8. Former AMU Riding Coach, Mr. Salim Bux Siddiqi

The Best Rider was Ris. Gulab Singh (RVC Saharanpur) followed by ASI. Nirmal Singh of Haryana Police. Ris. Gulab Singh was awarded the Nawab Mohammed Saeed Chattari Trophy by Mr. Nehal Singh & Mr. Yograj Singh (Minister, Govt of U.P.).

There were many eminent guests for all the five days including U.P. Minister Dr. Yeshwant Singh, Mr. Sanjay Garg, Mr. Saeeduzzaman, Mr. Somash Prakaash, Lt. Gen. J.K. Srivastava, and several others.

Governor of Haryana, Governor of Uttarakhand, Governor of Maharashtra, Minister of Defence for State, Mr. Pallam Raju, Member of Parliament Mr. Naveen Jindal and several other ministers sent their best wishes for the championship.

The organizing committee of the Championship had people mostly from AMU Alumni fraternity. These were:

  1. Mr. Salman Sayeed, Secretary General & Org. Secretary (AMU Alumni)
  2. Mr. Sanjay Garg, Minister (U.P), President, EAUP
  3. Mr. Ahmad Afsar, Show Director (AMU Alumni)
  4. Mr. Mirza Qaiser Beg, Chief Equitation Officer (AMU Alumni)
  5. Mr. Saeeduzzafar, EAUP Manager (AMU Alumni)
  6. Mr. Aleem Siddiqi, Riding Coach-Burhan Equestrian Society (AMU Alumni)

Though it is almost a month old news, I believe that we should all appreciate & encourage former Alumni who are doing their bits that are of appreciable significance.

UPSC Chairman is an AMU Alumni!

Adaab to all,

It was indeed great to hear one of the ZHCET girl student was on
ISRO's Chandrayaan Mission. It is commendable and must have been a
motivating factor to many of AMU's past & present students.

Nevertheless, I am wondering if AMU Old Boys Association knows the
fact that the current UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) Chairman
viz., Prof (Dr) D. P Agarwal, is an alumni of AMU's Z. H. College of
Engineering. He also belongs to Aligarh City and graduated from ZHCET
in late 1960s or early 1970s. I know him from the time I joined IIT,
Delhi after doing my B.Sc & M.Sc in Physics from AMU. I met Dr.
Agarwal and till I was in India had an excellent relationship with
him & his family.

I wonder if AMU ever thought of inviting him for any advise related
to its students' career prospects with Central Govt avenues. I will
strongly recommend that Dr. Agarwal should be invited both by Z H
College of Enginering as well as AMU's Academic Council and presented
with an award for bringing name & fame to AMU.
