Can Western Feminism Save Muslim Women
By: Dr. Asad U Khan
movement is that whenever there was an expansion in racial, sexual,
political rights and liberties it was because the people themselves
struggled against them to win their rights.
Muslim society has to come to grip that most of the issues facing
Muslim women are cultural and not part of the Islamic faith; these
include the wearing of the head scarf or Burqa, sex segregation,
killing of women for the supposed honour of the family etc.
Muslim women face multiple human rights issues and they need guidance
and support from their community leaders and western feminist sisters,
but these issues can be only addressed from inside and a solution
cannot be imposed from the outside.

The oppression of women is a global phenomenon and so it is reasonable
to say that it is a global concern. The desire by western feminists to
show concern and enter in the foray for Muslim women appears
reasonable and not imperialistic as suggested by some.
Recently a Sudanese journalist Lubna Hussain was fined $200, later
sent to prison for wearing pants at a public place. The punishment for
this crime according to Sudan's sharia laws includes public flogging
of women.
Andrew Brown in Guardian News Paper questioned why the Pakistani and
Bangladeshi Muslim women in the UK are the poorest and least employed;
is this because of racism, or religion or some combination of both.
The Quilliam Foundation of the UK in their survey rejected that
religion or racism were the causes for this disparity. The reasons
given by women were cultural and family traditions of being
stay-at-home mothers.
In Europe, Burqa furor scrambles; especially French politics according
to Steven Erlanger. The French discomfort with organized religion date
backs to the French revolution against the church. The Muslim women's
dress code reminds them of the repression of women of that era.
President Nicolas Sarkozy has joined the call to ban the Burqa in the
French Republic. He also thinks that Muslim women's head scarf is an
issue of liberty and the dignity of women.
For many French Muslims the entire discussion is an embarrassment and
an incitement to racial and religious hatred. The argument to ban the
head scarf in the name of' 'cultural integration' is often expressed
as open hostility towards the non-Judeo-Christian immigrants.
Throughout Europe there has been loud and at times, a racist debate
about Muslim women, should they be allowed to wear the head dress
while at work etc., and various bans have been enacted in several
jurisdictions.
In Germany, 8 of the 16 federal states have laws against head scarves.
In Sweden, Nyamko Sabuni, the Minister for Integration and Equality
wants all girls checked for evidence of female circumcision, and
criminalize arranged marriages. The Minister Sabuni who is from
African descent wants Muslim immigrants to integrate, and Muslim girls
to grow like other children in Sweden.
For the western feminist to assume that the Muslim head scarf is the
symbol of oppression is unfair and simplistic. The head scarf carries
a different meaning for each Muslim woman. The primary and common
motive for the scarf is the expression of modesty, but it also
represents many different things such as their Muslim identity,
cultural independence and empowerment
One important lesson learned from the history of the civil rightssent to prison for wearing pants at a public place. The punishment for
this crime according to Sudan's sharia laws includes public flogging
of women.

Deadly Flaws In AMU Official Website
A new website for AMU was much needed and much awaited by the AMU community. When I went through the New Website, I couldn't believe that it is once again pathetically built. It is an insult for an institution of international caliber. Apart from serious spelling mistakes there are design and technical flaws as well.
Various AMU groups and Alumni have commented on the state of AMU website, Some of them are as follows:
1. World Of Alig Group says "AMU Web site .........A Biodata bank for some officials...a new approach of personal glorifications."
2. Arif Salim Arif Salim B.Tech. 1998 Dubai "Whoever manages and designs the site needs to look and learn from the infinite number of sites on the net especially those of other universities. If you can't be creative at least try to imitate the current trend - which is a few light years ahead of you."
3. Mohammad Shariq S.S.S.C.(10+2) -1997 Mumbai "Now we understand why AMU and its affiliated institutions name does not come in any of the ranking. The organization who do ranking must be looking on the official websites and this is what they will get."
- The sole link to Our Founder has been mercilessly buried deep on the second last step of the towering sidebar menu.
- It lacks the "A NAME" record. To the people who are unaware, "A NAME" record is the new standard that allows the site to be accessed even if it is not prefixed with www. before the site name.
- The sidebar has been illogically split and half the menu is badly stuck on the right side of the page, is the space in the sidebar insufficient.
- Two flashing blocks on one page that is hardly beyond the screen size. A newbie's most common design mistake.
- No "favicon" logo to make a mark in the browser's addresbar.
- REGISTRAR seems to be the most important officer in AMU, because the founder has been alloted only one link while the registrar has 3 links on the same page. See, In the sidebar menu Adminstration - REGISTRAR Next in the right side illogical menu Important Links - REGISTRAR, No this is not the end, once again, in Useful Links - REGISTRAR.

4. A letter by Mohd. Khalid Sayeed MBA 2006 New Delhi:
Dear Web- (Mal)Administrator,
Its time to understand that you are administrating a website and not a cob-web in controllers office. My heartiest congratulation for upgrading amu website otherwise I don't know whether it exist or how worse it was before. No matter, you didn't make any difference. Sorry folks! I cant be other than blunt.
I even congratulate Mr Zesshan Ahmad for writing self congratulatory mail for inauguration of this pre historic site. I must say Good morning! and welcome to circa 2009. Sir,for your kind knowledge, It has been ages, when MIT invented www and we are now living in a era of Twitters and Facebook.
Mr. Web Master I don't know why you have put CV of Vice Chancellor. I don't know whether he has email id or you due to some secret after RTI act, don't want to reveal.
Why we have website for AMU controller, AMU Registrar etc separately, which is funded by Student's fees and UGC fund, when all of them convey same information. Is it some Ego problem to have a website or Mr. Web Administrator didn't know that its not necessary to have separate website if you want to move from one page to another. Its called HTML.
Kindly look at the website of BHU and JNU. Also I include,Kindly look at website of JMI and Osmania.

Norman Ernest Borlaug (March 25, 1914 – September 12, 2009)was an American agronomist, humanitarian, and Nobel laureate, and has been called the father of the Green Revolution. Borlaug was one of only five people to have won the Nobel Peace Prize, the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal. He was also a recipient of the Padma Vibhushan, India's second-highest civilian honor.
Prof. Pervez Qamar Rizvi, Dean, Faculty of Agricultural Sciences mentioned that Norman was one of the hundred most influential minds of the 20thCentury and until his death on September 12, 2009, he continued to devote himself to passing on the next generation his passion for the science and education as the means to uplift people who lived in poverty.

Sultan Of Brunei: Burning Topic In AMU Related Forum
A gentleman posted the pictures of lavish life relished by the Sultan of Brunei.
The question here is : Should the Sultan be spending like this?
The following is quoted from the mail itself.
The question here is : Should the Sultan be spending like this?
The following is quoted from the mail itself.
3 children are born every second in this world;
10 mobile phones sold on the international level;
Auto manufacturers produce a car every 4.5 seconds on average;
and on the level of the human mind = brain cells send 200 directives each second to perform the various functions of physical and mental health.
The world spends 37 million euros for arms on the international level in one second
And the Sultan of Brunei's wealth increases by 90 euros every second!
No envy please!
This means around 5400 euros per minute, 324000 euros each hour, 7776000 euros a day
Implies about 54432000 euros a week (that's 54 million and 432000 thousand euros)
Brunei's Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah ... President of the richest country in the world
Popular, lavish, ... uses gold in everything
Was born literally eating with spoons made of gold
Clothes worn embroidered with gold and silver
These are some pictures of his palace ...
The largest and most luxurious palace in the world...
Consists of 1788 rooms with some furnished in gold and diamond-encrusted
257 bath inlaid with gold and silver
and a garage to accommodate 110 cars
The palace has 650 suites ... each furnished at not less than 150,000 thousand euros
This requires the visitor to spend 24 hours just to inspect each room for 30 seconds
