AMU to confer D. Lit. (Honoris Causa) degree upon Indian Music Maestro, Mr. A. R. Rahman, the first Oscar Award winner.

ALIGARH, February 25: The Executive Council of the Aligarh Muslim University has decided to confer D. Lit. (Honoris Causa) degree upon Indian Music Maestro, Mr. A.R. Rahman, the first Oscar Award winner.

The University has also decided to confer the Honorary degree to noted Urdu writer Professor Gopichand Narang, former President of Sahitya Academy. Earlier the Executive Council has also decided to confer the honorary degree up on Mr. Ratan Tata, Nano Car technology fame and Professor M. S. Swaminathan, father of green revolution at the annual convocation which will be held on April 25, 2009.

The Executive Council has approved the recommendation of the Academic Council and adopted the guidelines for the re-employment of teachers. Executive Council also approved the annual statement of account as approved by the Finance Committee of the University held on October 11, 2008.

The Executive Council considered the recommendations of the grievance committee as approved by the Grievance Committee and Executive Council resolved to appoint Justice Mahmood Ali, former Judge of Delhi High Court for assisting Justice Faizanuddin, earlier appointed as one man enquiry commission to conduct the time bound enquiry into the series of incidents of indiscipline and crime that occurred in the AMU Campus between June 26 and September 2007. The Executive Committee directed the Commission to submit its report within eight months.

The Executive Council has authorized the Vice Chancellor to take appropriate action for the proper conduct of the case of minority character of the University pending in the Supreme Court.

The Executive Council also expressed gratitude towards the Prime Minister of India, Shri Manmohan Singh and the Union Health Minister, Shri Ambumani Ramados for providing Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College the status of Institute of Medical Sciences. The Executive Council said that the grant of 150 crore rupees to JNMC will help in raising its status up to the desired level.

The EC also expressed thanks to the Union Minister of HRD, Shri Arjun Singh and Minister of State for HRD, Shri Mohammad Ali Ashraf Fatmi for taking interest in the upgradation of University schools and for announcing the necessary grant for the establishment of an IAS Coaching Academy at Aligarh Muslim University.

The Executive Council passed condolence motion on the sad demise of the former Visitor of Aligarh Muslim University and Former President of India Shri R. Venkataraman, Former Prime Minister of India Shri V. P. Singh, the noted scholar of Persian Padma Shri Professor Nazeer Ahmad and Professor Zahiruddin Malik, retired professor, Department of History to pay tribute to the departed souls.
